Visit the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, just a short drive away and boasting the oldest water balanced, funicular cliff tramway in Great Britain alongside great restaurants and beaches.

The village of Loftus has good amenities, including three pubs, a Gin palace with micro-brewery, local grocery shops, bakery and an award winning bookshop stocking plenty of local authors and gifts. In the ‘Iron Valley’ of Skinningrove you’ll find secluded beaches and The Tom Leonard Mining Museum.

Enjoy the fishing port of Whitby, with its winding cobbled streets, famous abbey and wonderful fish and chips, or explore the spectacular coastline and dramatic North York Moors. Ironstone Cottage is in a peaceful village served by a little local shop, with the rolling heather clad moors just at the end of the road. These stone terraced cottages were built for the miners back in 1860. You can visit the nearby mining museum to find out more about the history, as this area was at the heart of the steel industry back in the 1800s. The name Ironstone Cottage was chosen to honour the history of the area, the owner’s father was employed to care for the pit ponies from the age of 11. Now the biggest draw to the area is tourism as guests explore the national park and the nearby beaches. There are a host of wonderful walks and cycle trails to explore, this is the perfect base for those who enjoy nature.
Just a short drive away you have Saltburn, Staithes and Runswick Bay leading down to the incredibly popular coastal town of Whitby, all ideal for a day of discovery. On the moors there are some stunning beauty spots such as Roseberry Topping as well as quaint rural villages with some great pubs, perfect as a reward after a day of walking.

The North Yorkshire Moors is a fabulous and varied destination to explore, you can take a ride on the steam train which runs from the coast to visit many pretty rural villages, including Goathland which was the set for the popular TV show Heartbeat, as well as the Hogsmeade station in Harry Potter. Brotton village is just on the edge of Saltburn-by-the-Sea and you are only a 2-minute walk away from the nearest village pub. For golf lovers Brotton boasts one of the best golf courses in North Yorkshire. There are also a couple of takeaways and a small village shop here. The bus stop on the high street through the village gives you the option of leaving your car for the day whilst exploring the area. You are in the perfect position to explore the surrounding coastline. This is a walker’s paradise as the Cleveland Way walking trail connects all the little coastal villages and towns, before continuing out onto the North York Moors National Park – it is over 110 miles long but it is well worth doing smaller sections to enjoy some of the most incredible cliff top views. Neighbouring Saltburn has an impressive Victorian pier to watch the rolling waves, it’s a surfers’ paradise and you can watch as they ride the waves, or join in at the local surf school. There is an array of coffee shops, wine bars and independent shops here, as well as some wonderful restaurants for you to choose from.
Skinningrove is only 2 miles away and has the most incredible beach tucked away there, for beach lovers it is a must. Enjoy the nearby quirky fishing villages of Staithes, 7 miles, and Robin Hood’s Bay, 25 miles, or the unspoilt sandy beaches of Sandsend, 16 miles, and Runswick Bay, 9 miles. Whitby, 20 miles, is steeped in history and there are many visitor attractions that are connected to the town’s fascinating past, such as the Captain Cook Memorial Museum where you can learn about the famous explorer’s life in the port town. A trip to Whitby would not be the same without climbing the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, exploring the ruins and views which tower over the town.

The village of Skinningrove is undiscovered by most tourists and is peaceful all year round. It is a quaint little bay, with neighbouring Cattersty Sands just a short walk away.
