- York, EnglandWithin the North York Moors National Park, in a sheltered wooded valley close to the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, these spacious, comfortable and well equipped holiday cottages stand in a landscaped courtyard, close to the owners’ farmhouse. Guests can enjoy farmhouse breakfasts in the conservatory at Laskill Grange, while across the drive at Laskill Country House, the owners’ daughter offers home cooked evening meals or ready prepared frozen meals to enjoy in the comfort of your holiday cottage. Visitors can wander the 70 acres of beautifully tended grounds or relax in the shared terrace garden with its small lake and river frontage. The views over the surrounding countryside are superb, and there is excellent walking from the doorstep. Long distance footpaths along this area’s Heritage Coastline, and the Cleveland Way, offer perfect terrain for walkers and cyclists. The Ryedale Folk Museum at popular Hutton-Le-Hole, and the ruins of Rosedale Abbey are both worth a visit. For a day out, the North York Moors Railway runs steam train journeys between Grosmont and Pickering. Whitby, is easily reached, with miles of sandy beaches and an ancient abbey overlooking its harbour. Scarborough, and the coastal villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend are all within 20 miles. Horse racing at Thirsk, Wetherby and York, 25 miles. - Staithes, EnglandSituated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

- Skipton, EnglandYellison, on the Broughton Hall Estate, is set along a single track road and commands spectacular views over the estate, Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales beyond. As you descend the gravel path which leads to this detached farmhouse you’ll feel right at home. On entering the house you’re greeted with a rustic dining room where your whole group will enjoy dining together and planning your next adventure. There are four comfortable and stylish bedrooms all with en-suite facilities, one which is on the ground floor, creating ideal accommodation for a larger group. Next to Yellison are the Land Rover Experience offices from where experience days are offered (by direct arrangement with the owner) for an exhilarating drive along the land rover track and obstacles on the estate. The vast 3000-acre grounds are at your disposal, wander down through the estate and admire the imposing stately home of Broughton Hall itself, spot wildlife and birds as well as quaint bridges across the river.
The popular market town of Skipton is 3 miles away and offers a host of things to do for all ages. The Tour de France and the Tour de Yorkshire have both passed through Skipton and the surrounding countryside in recent years. Why not bring your bike and explore some of the routes for yourself? The area is peppered with gourmet pubs serving local produce as well as hearty, traditional pub food and there’s a plethora of restaurants and bars in Skipton to choose from should you wish to treat yourself and dine out during your stay. The owner has thoughtfully provided a complementary welcome pack including wine, milk and a selection of delicious homemade cakes.
