The beach is 5 yards away so beach exploring, tidal swimming and crabbing is outside the door. Paddle-boarding and kayak on request.Windsurfing, kite-surfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing and sea fishing can be enjoyed from the beach (equipment not provided). Be prepared to drive out for trips and other amenities in local towns.
    The Colne Estuary offers further fishing and boating opportunities. Check out Brightlingsea Harbour. There is a great watersports park at St Osyth, a 2-mile drive away. This area is well regarded as Essex’s ‘best kept secret’, with the popular coastal towns of Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe, Mersea, Clacton, Frinton and Walton-on-the-Naze, all within half an hour’s drive. There is a foot ferry (summer months) to Mersea Island to Brightlingsea to enjoy the promenade, lido and fish and chips. The town of Colchester is close by, famous for its cobbled streets, castle and world renowned zoo, with a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Further afield are Ipswich, Chelmsford and Felixstowe. Many picturesque villages and the Constable Country are close by - Dedham, Flatford Mill and Manningtree within ½ hour and, Nayland, Lavenham and Long Melford to name but a few. Other local pastimes include golf.

Shoppers should head to the medieval city of Norwich, which was voted one of the top ten shopping locations in the UK. Here you will also find a splendid Norman castle and a host of museums and galleries, all of which make this city a great day out, reached either by car or the nearby railway line.
    Add in lots of great walks, cycle routes and wildlife watching opportunities and you will see why this area remains so popular. After a day out exploring and having worked up a great appetite, you will be delighted to find that there are not only lots of great places to eat close to Kirkley Cliff, but lots of delivery options for when you are too tired to cook or venture out.     Nearby Ickworth Park and Anglesey Abbey, both National Trust owned country houses, provide beautiful parkland and gardens. Barrow has two very popular pubs for eating out or you can pick up fresh fish and chips or find your self-catering essentials in one of two convenience stores. Historical sites and quaint streets await in Bury St Edmunds, with the fascinating ruins of Bury St Edmunds Abbey Gardens just next to the Cathedral, with beautiful grounds, perfect for a picnic in the sunshine. Enjoy fine dining in a wide range of eateries, or a night at the movies in the independent Picture House or Cineworld.
    Drive a little further and you will step back in time in Lavenham where you can visit the house used in Harry Potter’s film which was Harry’s parents’ house in ‘Godric’s Hollow’, also considered to be one of Britain’s best preserved medieval villages, where over 300 buildings are listed as being of architectural and historic interest. Wandering along narrow lanes, past timber-framed houses and the stunning Guildhall, you’ll find antique shops, galleries and cafés. Newmarket, just 8 miles to the west, is home to the National Horse Racing Museum and Links Golf Club, with leading supermarkets and a variety of traditional eateries to fuel your day.
    Jump onto the A14 and head to the west to the spectacular city of Cambridge, famed for its rich cultural and academic heritage, University Colleges, an impressive collection of over 18 museums and galleries, the Fitzwilliam Museum, home to a large collection of art and artefacts, the renowned Cambridge University Botanic Garden, and excellent shopping, meaning that Cambridge has something for everyone. Meander through the city and take in the beauty of the university colleges and gleaming spires or lie back and enjoy a relaxing punt along the river. The Suffolk coast and picturesque seaside towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh are within easy reach, if a day on the beach is on your wish list. Duxford air Museum is approximately 25 minutes’ drive. Other places of interest to visit are the nearby Bressingham Steam Museum, and Planet Laser in Bury St Edmunds (which also hosts a Christmas market). There are excellent restaurants in the village of Culford, and private dining can be booked at the local restaurant if required. Clay pigeon shooting and horse riding can be booked in the village, whilst paint balling, Go Ape and the Dad’s Army Museum are attractions at Thetford.
