- EnglandDating back to the 1600s, The Old Dairy justifies its name. However, it has been beautifully renovated to a high specification with modern and luxurious touches throughout, and is now a wonderful self-catering cottage for two in the heart of the West Sussex countryside.
The kitchen has been cleverly designed with a large hatch overlooking the sitting room area, the perfect way to both show off your culinary skills and enjoy the warmth of the wood burner roaring away in the corner. The conservatory provides a lovely sunny room to dine or doze in on a warm summer’s day, with gorgeous views over the paddocks. After dinner you can curl up, open a book or simply enjoy each other’s company in this relaxed country retreat. If you would like use of a freestanding fridge/freezer please advise before you arrive so access to it can be organised.
Why not bring your horses? This cottage benefits from its own stabling on site and, what’s more, the conservatory looks out over the paddocks where your horses can graze. Equestrian facilities are on offer for up to three horses (by prior arrangement at an additional cost): DIY livery including stabling, grazing paddocks, a lockable tack room and large lorry/horsebox parking on site. Centrally located for all things equestrian: hunts, several competition centres such as Coombelands,Hickstead, Goodwoord, polo clubs (Cowdray, Knepp and Hurtwood), flat racing, point to points at Parham or just hacks (including on the beach). You can explore the countryside on horseback as well as walking and/or cycling in the area.
Why not head out in the morning and return for an invigorating shower in the stunning white-tiled wet room, or take a picnic and wander into the evening skies to watch the sunset with a cold bottle of bubbles. Either way, a wonderful holiday experience in this quiet part of rural Sussex.£124From price per night based on 7 night stay
- Chichester, EnglandAt the foot of Older Hill, half a mile down an unamde lane, and set amongst the flora and fauna of Woolbeding Common, Swallows Bottom is an 18th-century rural cottage that’s been updated and modernised for adventurers of all ages.
Surrounded on three sides by a National Trust-owned common, within the South Downs National Park, there is a mix of heathland and woodland, streams and footpaths to explore on your doorstep. The cottage itself is a historic countryside farming house with rustic yet modernised interior including a spacious kitchen with an electric Aga and a cosy wood burner.
The living room includes a second wood burner. It’s the perfect sanctuary for relaxation after a busy day exploring in the woods or swimming in the pool. As well as the Smart TV, there’s a ceiling-mounted projector and popcorn maker for fun cinema nights in. Upstairs there are four bedrooms - one with bunk beds ideal for the younger ones, and a family bathroom.
At the top of the garden is the pool area which includes a large studio that sleeps an extra two. The studio includes its own kitchenette and bathroom. The studio is adjacent to the heated pool (available May 23rd to Sept 12th). Next to the pool and studio is a raised decked area and rattan furniture that’s perfect for summer entertaining - a real sun trap late into the evening that feels more like the south of France on a hot summer’s day. The pool is set up for fun and games, with a slide and a Fastlane current system that jets water to mimic the flow of a river – great for kids and fantastic exercise for adults.
What truly makes Swallows Bottom unique is its tucked-away position with miles of footpaths in every direction. There are woodland and heathland to explore on its doorstep, and sparkling streams and ponds all around.
Waiting to be discovered in the woods is the original spring, where Swallows Bottom used to source its water, a woodland campsite with a parachute cover. Further afield, you will discover the cows that graze the heathland. For wildlife lovers, there are bats and badgers, owls and foxes, deer and buzzards – and swallows of course.
Swallows Bottom is an amazing location for creating your own adventures and treasured memories.£296From price per night based on 7 night stay
