The wonderful National Trust property Uppark House and Gardens can be seen from the house and is a 5-minute drive from Compton. The picturesque town of Petersfield is just 9 miles away; this ancient market town was originally built as a Norman ’new town’ at the end of the 11th century. The main square provides an attractive focal point providing the perfect venue for the traditional market every Saturday and Wednesday.

Chichester, Chichester Harbour and Goodwood are all around 10 miles away. The city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient but fantastically preserved Roman city walls with broad streets that are packed with listed buildings. It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining 2000 years of heritage, with a lively lifestyle headed by the towering presence of the cathedral. For some classically British pastimes, the famous Goodwood Estate offers a range of activities including a championship golf course, the motor circuit, racecourse and aerodrome.

For days out for a beach trip, look no further than West Wittering’s famous sands (it gets very busy in summer!). A little further afield, and Portsmouth is famous as the home of HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and also the Mary Rose. The historic dockyard sits right next to Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower, which offer spectacular views over Portsmouth and the Solent. Beach 13½ miles.

The WWT Wetland Centre, Swanbourne Lake and South Downs National Park with its pretty villages and fabulous hiking opportunities are all within 5 minutes. Numerous stately homes and gardens are dotted around the area. Goodwood with its world famous motor circuit and horse racing venue is a 20 minute easy drive. The pretty grass runway airport here offers the chance to take an airborne sightseeing experience offering memorable views of the coastline including Portsmouth Dockyards, Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower that by road are a 40 minute drive. Lunch or tea airside in this stunning location is also possible. Dogs are welcomed everywhere at Goodwood. Two championship golf courses are on the estate and spa experiences available at the hotel. Tours and afternoon tea are available also here at the stately home. Chichester with its cathedral and Festival Theatre are a short drive, Brighton being 18 miles distant. Dog friendly beaches abound with quite a collection very nearby, a favourite being West Beach at Climping where there is the lovely Baliffscourt for a special dining treat.

Goatchers Cottage and Goatchers Studio are situated in the pretty garden of the owner who lives at the property location and renovated the properties to the highest levels. Both have amazing beds, one being a French Antique and the other being a four poster. The properties are located in The South Downs National Park in the pretty village of Findon which is a semi-rural clustered village and civil parish in the Arun District of West Sussex, England, 4 miles north of Worthing.
Located very close to Cissbury Ring which is owned by the National Trust and is designated a Scheduled monument for its Neolithic flint mine and Iron Age hillfort. Cissbury Ring is the largest hill fort in Sussex, the second largest in England and one of the largest in Europe overall, covering some 60 acres. The village has a couple of traditional pubs serving amazing food as well as a few restaurants all within a short walk. If mountain biking is your thing then you are in for a real treat as there are plenty of trails locally that will get the blood pumping.
Brighton is located just over 14 miles to the East and Worthing beach is just 5 miles South and being submerged in The South Down National Park there is plenty of opportunity to explore this beautiful part of the world. Just park up and walk through the gates to the properties where you will find some great hospitality from the owners. Both of these properties are newly renovated and of the highest standard with some sitting out space which is literally bathed in the sunshine all day.

From a raised footpath above the street, the small entrance hall opens into the open plan living space, with wood burner and Smart TV. A little further into the room, a large dining table sits next to the modern kitchen, and there is a huge hatchway for easy serving and a fantastic social aspect to the room. Two two rattan chairs sit in a sunny spot next to the French doors that lead onto the patio. There is a small desk in the living room, and a separate toilet in the entrance hall. Stairs lead from the dining area to the first floor. Upstairs is a generous master bedroom with kingsize bed, built-in wardrobe, an armchair and table to enjoy views of the world going by on the street below. The second bedroom also offers a kingsize bed, a built-in wardrobe and fabulous rooftop views over Arundel, the River Arun and the Arun plain. Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the keep, which dates from the 11th century, to take in the views over Arundel and the South Downs is definitely worth the effort. Beyond the castle grounds, Arundel Park SSSI extends north towards the Downs offering many fine walks. The Mill Road entrance at Swanbourne Lake is just a short walk from the castle.

The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds, lakes and reed beds, Arundel Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust attracts some of the world’s most spectacular ducks, geese, swans and other wetland birds. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise, stopping off at the serene Black Rabbit pub, or proceeding further north where the river hugs the scarp wooded slope at the foot of the Downs before reaching Amberley.
Further afield, Arundel is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away, heading directly south from Arundel. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest, and at the eastern end beside the mouth of the River Arun is the West Beach Café, built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is worth a visit, the fish and chips come highly recommended! Goodwood with its Festival of Speed, Revival and Qatar Festival (Glorious Goodwood) and Fontwell racecourses are nearby, along with the cathedral city of Chichester – with its excellent Festival Theatre noted for not only the quality of productions but also the fact many world premieres are featured as well.

The Area Rustington is a bustling seaside village about a half-mile walk from Seaview where you’ll find a choice of restaurants coffee house and local pubs. To the west of Seaview is the seaside resort of Littlehampton with its popular East and West beaches split by the River Arun’s estuary. Littlehampton has a bustling marina and harbour where you can watch the fishermen bringing in their daily catch or perhaps take a stroll along the boulevard and enjoy the attractions of this traditional seaside resort. A charming flint cottage set in a wonderful South Downs hamlet with stunning countryside views and walks on the doorstep. This former farm building was once part of the Duke of Norfolk’s Estate and now is a wonderful holiday retreat with panoramic views of the South Downs.

Walnut Tree Cottage has an open plan living space with access to the patio with garden furniture, perfect spot for breakast with uninterrupted views. The kitchen is well-equipped and there are two bedrooms, one with en-suite facilities, and a separate bathroom.

Patching is a quaint village centred along ’The Street’. At the top as the lane climbs towards the South Downs is the church and beside that the Walnut Tree Cottage. Footpaths lead from here to the Downs on a number of different routes. To the east is Long Furlong, a magnificent crescent-shaped piece of downland - it’s like the South Downs in miniature. It is easily reached from the neighbouring village of Clapham where a walk along the top gives great views inland. Take the downland paths around the woodland of Angmering Park and you reach the attractive villages of Wepham and Burpham 3 miles to the west. Like Patching they lie at the foot of the Downs and are frequented by walkers. The George and Dragon is a traditional English country pub set right in the heart of Burpham and is worth visiting - it is hard to pass by when enjoying a walk to Burpham!

The perfect holiday retreat in a tranquil Sussex village in the heart of the South Downs. In the heyday of the diminutive Ferguson Tractor this was the tractor shed at Sutton Farm. As tractors grew in size it soon became redundant, however the Old Tractor Shed is still very much part of a small working farm set in the most beautiful Sussex village of Sutton. This is an imaginative conversion; it is very rustic and provides comfortable accommodation for up to five people. The Old Tractor Shed is located on a 100-acre farm combining arable and sheep farming along with fabulous views to the South Downs. Stay here in early spring and the new born lambs can be seen in the barn immediately behind the accommodation.
The accommodation is cleverly arranged over three floors. On the ground floor enjoying full length windows is the main living room and kitchen combining as a large open space area. The principal double bedroom with a shower room is also on the ground floor while the second bedroom, fitted with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom is on the first floor. From the ground floor head down a few steps and there is a second living space with sofa bed looking onto the lane. Outside there is a private patio that is a wonderful suntrap that enjoys the afternoon and evening sun. Within the farm there is also stabling facilities for up to two horses plus use of a paddock.
Sutton is one of four picturesque Sussex villages along with Barlavington, Bignor and West Burton that sit in line at the foot of the South Downs. These traditional villages are of great appeal to visitors and the area affords much peace and tranquillity. The local pub in Sutton in the heart of the village is just 200 yards away and is open for breakfast lunch and dinner. It’s a free house serving local cask ales beers and wines together with locally sourced high quality traditional British pub food with a contemporary accent. There are many local footpaths and bridleways and footpaths climb up from the village onto the Downs, however if you are feeling less energetic there is a car park at Whiteways beside Bury Hill approximately 3 miles to the east or you can take the lane to the Downs from Bignor and park at the top beside the South Downs Way. This is where Stane Street the Roman road crosses the South Downs on route from London towards Eartham and Chichester giving a choice of good walking in that direction or east or west along the line of the Downs. The historic market town of Petworth is 4 miles to the north and is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown, and the house is now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner, Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it is worth taking the time to browse having visited Petworth House. To the east there is Amberley Working Museum and the small community of Houghton on the River Arun. Beach 15½ miles. Shop 3 miles, pub 200 yards, restaurant 4 miles.

Drive 10 minutes and you will be in Midhurst, here you will find the grand Tudor ruins of Cowdray House, one of England’s most important early Tudor houses.

A little further and you will reach the historic town of Petworth, which is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House completed in 1696. The House and its grounds are now owned and maintained by the National Trust, and the magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collections. With Goodwood less than half an hour’s drive from Oak Grove you are perfectly placed to visit Goodwood House. You can also take the opportunity to attend one of the many events at the Goodwood Motoring circuit such as the Festival of Speed or the Revival meeting.
