- Lynton, EnglandWestern Heights is a four bedroom detached cottage, perfect for six people, and is situated high up in this stunning location. Access to the cottage is by foot only via 12 steps in total with a long, lit gravel pathway in between, so this is not recommended for anyone with walking difficulties. As you arrive you will see a handy square switch on the wall by the house sign which will light your way up the path when dark. Parking for one car is available down below via a driveway but you can pull in by the footpath and unload before parking up.
Accommodation comprises four bedrooms on the first floor, three of which benefit from beautiful sea views. On the ground floor, there is a comfortable living room with TV and Amazon Firestick, plus a cosy wood burner for relaxing evenings in. The bright and contemporary kitchen/diner has everything you’ll need for your stay and access out onto the large decking where the views over the sea and towards Wales are spectacular, and outside is the best place to truly enjoy the views. Along with the main decking you’ll find a table and chairs for al-fresco dining, there is also a further smaller decking that sits above the cottage where the views get even better! The perfect place to enjoy a quiet evening drink with a book in hand. At the back of the cottage you will also find a handy outdoor WC and an outhouse containing a washing machine and tumble dryer.
Lynton, also known as ‘Little Switzerland’, is a small Victorian town which lies on the northern edge of the West Country peninsula in an area of incomparable beauty within Exmoor National Park. Bracken and heather clad, the sweeping hills and valleys nestle between these and spectacular cliffs. Rivers wind their way through deeply wooded valleys on their way to the sea, occasionally interrupted by tumbling waterfalls. The remarkable Valley of the Rocks, which is a must see, is a dry valley that runs parallel to the coast and is just over a mile to the west of Lynton. It is a popular tourist destination noted for its herd of feral goats and for its landscape and geology. There’s a Victorian fishing lodge at Watersmeet which is now run by the National Trust and the area which has dramatic waterfalls is worth a visit.
Inland there are numerous walks through the rugged scenery of the National Park with over 600 miles of marked footpaths! Exmoor itself has abundant wildlife, including ponies, sheep and red deer that graze the open moorland, and overhead you might see falcons, buzzards and even the rare merlin. The surrounding coastline and countryside boast some of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring sea and hillside views you can find! There are some amazing walks that can be taken directly from the property, and local restaurants, pubs, cafés, tea rooms and various craft, boutique, novelty and antique shops are all within easy reach. - Winsford, EnglandLocated in stunning Exmoor National Park and just 55 minutes from Exeter, this beautiful, semi-detached, Grade II thatched cottage is situated a few steps away from a pub, which is also owned by the cottage’s owner. Here you can indulge in some tasty fayre made with locally sourced fresh produce or simply pop along for a drink or two in traditional and comfortable surroundings.
The accommodation comprises three bedrooms on the first floor; a super kingsize and main bathroom with a clawfoot bath and a walk-in wardrobe, which are accessed via the first staircase on one side of the cottage, and bunk bedroom and double room, both benefiting from a ‘Jack and Jill’ style en-suite shower room, with a double size rain shower cubicle. These rooms are accessed via a quirky spiral-style staircase so some care should be taken going up and down. Chittlehampton is a traditional north Devon village (between Barnstaple and South Molton) and the first village where the Saxons settled during their 8th century invasion of Devon. There are some great walks from the farm up onto Exmoor which is designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve, and there are a number of walks on the estate that take you down through woods and along valleys by rivers and past lakes. The walks are mainly off road and a wide variety of wildlife can be seen, from the wild red deer that Exmoor is famous for, to the tiny but vibrant kingfisher. On the estate there are 2 spring fed lakes; these have a population of wild brown trout. Fishing on the lakes is available in the fishing season. The village of North Molton, a short drive away, has a good local shop and pub. The larger town of South Molton has a wider range of shops and local amenities.
During your stay, there is plenty to see and do. Highlights on the moor include the pretty village of Withypool, and the the famous and ancient Tarr Steps. Climb to Exmoor’s highest point at Dunkery Beacon, and then pop into the Dulverton for an afternoon cream tea. There is extensive walking to suit all abilities across the moor, and towards the coastline there are dramatic, steep cliffs at Countisbury. In the Victorian towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, there is plenty to see and do, and the two towns are connected by the famous funicular cliff railway. Other local highlights include the Valley of the Rocks, and there is also access to the South West Coast Path. For good beaches, head up to Woolacombe, Putborough and Croyde. You will be able to enjoy some of the best beaches in the country with surfing and rock pooling. For those with young children, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife Park and Watermouth Castle all provide an interesting and entertaining day out.
