There are local buses to various destinations including Winchester and Petersfield.
In the heart of the South Downs National Park, this wonderful part of Hampshire provides direct access to miles of scenic walks across the Meon Valley, including the South Downs Way. Neighbouring East Meon, 3 miles, has a pretty church and good pubs. Within easy reach are the glorious South Downs, Queen Elizabeth Country Park, the naval city of Portsmouth with its historic dockyard, home to Nelson’s Victory and The Mary Rose, along with waterside dining, extensive designer shopping and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight. The ancient city of Winchester with its stunning cathedral and science centre, Southampton with its shopping centre and the New Forest with its extensive heathland walks, riding and cycling opportunities is approximately 40 minutes away. Historic Chichester with its cathedral and festival theatre, beaches at the Witterings or Hayling Island, the Watercress steam train, Jane Austens’ House, Gilbert White’s house and Birdworld, Marwell Zoo and Peppa Pig World are all easily accessible from White Horse Cottage and fishing is available nearby. London is about an hour by train from nearby Petersfield. Beach 20 miles. Shop, post office, pub and cafe 100 yards.

Roaming ponies and cattle can often be found outside the cottage or wandering through Burley – it certainly makes a change from a traditional traffic jam!

The unspoilt forest and heathland with wandering ponies and cattle are what makes the New Forest famous. Miles of beautiful walks are available, as is golf, or alternatively the surrounding area can be explored by car or on bicycle via the many cycle paths, where you can discover some of the appealing villages, towns, attractions, and gardens such as Lyndhurst, the sailing town of Lymington (with ferry terminal to the Isle of Wight), Beaulieu Motor Museum, Exbury Gardens and the riverside village of Bucklers Hard. The county of Hampshire itself was enjoyed by Jane Austen with her house and museum in Chawton and her resting place in Winchester Cathedral. Further afield but well worth a trip is Christchurch, Monkey World and the Tank Museum near Wool. Marwell Zoo, Peppa Pig World, ‘Go Ape’ adventure park, The Owl and Otter Park and nautical maritime history at Southampton, with retail shopping outlets, are also within easy reach. The coastline with its beaches at Bournemouth, Sandbanks and Poole is within a short drive, with golden beaches and has many popular activities such as windsurfing, boating and swimming. Leygreen Farmhouse is a detached house located on a country lane outside Beaulieu this beautiful building was once a B&B, but is now a lovely holiday home for friends and families to enjoy together. It offers six spacious bedrooms, five of which are en-suite and one with use of the adjacent shower room. The property has a very spacious kitchen with a breakfast bar and an Aga for you to use. There is a wonderful dining room for you to all sit down and enjoy a meal together before heading into the cosy living room with its open fire. Leygreen Farmhouse is 1-mile outside of Beaulieu, a delightful village and will be worth a visit, with adorable gift shops and tea rooms and with the Beaulieu National Motor Museum there is enough to keep everyone entertained for the day. The New Forest National Park provides plenty of opportunities including incredible walks where you will see free roaming cattle, ponies and donkeys, you can go canoeing and kayaking, cycling and there is also archery to try your hand at. At the Lymington Salt Water Baths there is a 218 yard inflatable obstacle course, hot tubs, paddle boarding, and aqua jousting. You can drive to the ferry that will take you to the stunning Isle of Wight for the day, or Bournemouth, which has been voted the UK’s best beach numerous times. Pay a visit to Hurst Castle, Exbury Gardens, the New Forest Reptile Centre, and Paultons Park with Peppa Pig World. There is so much to do nearby that the most difficult thing you will have to do during your break is deciding which activities you want to do during your stay. Beach 20 miles. Known as ‘The Heart of The New Forest’, Lyndhurst offers various cafés, restaurants, shops and inns. The location is ideal for walkers, and Cosy Cottage is only a couple of minutes’ walk from the open forest where ponies and donkeys graze.
There is so much to do in The New Forest with attractions for all ages, including Paulton’s Park with Peppa Pig World just a short drive away. Beaulieu Motor Museum, the riverside village of Bucklers Hard and many picturesque villages are also close by just waiting to be discovered. Shops, pubs and restaurants are just a short walk away and there are several beaches about 15 minutes’ drive away. Why not treat yourself to a cream tea or ice cream at one of the many tea rooms or ice cream parlours? The sailing town of Lymington is about a 10-minute drive, with regular ferries to the Isle of Wight, which makes for a great day out. Try your hand at horse riding, golf, fishing, cycling, bird watching, sailing and rambling, or simply relax and soak up the beautiful views that the glorious New Forest offers! Beach 15 miles. Little Trout is a charming, comfortable, single-storey thatched annexe forming a wing of the owner’s main home which dates back to the 17th century and has an interesting past! Historians have said that it was formerly a drinking establishment, referred to as The Trout Inn, and it was also a tea room. In the late 19th century cricket bats were made and sold at The Trout (to the great W.G. Grace, amongst others) using the local Wallop willow which was considered perfect for the purpose. Some even maintain that the village name inspired the phrase about giving a cricket ball a ’jolly good wallop.’

Little Trout is nestled in the pretty village of Nether Wallop in Hampshire’s Test Valley. Consisting of Nether Wallop, Middle Wallop and Over Wallop, the Wallops are mentioned in the Domesday Book. In 1984, Stephen Pile, a writer for the Sunday Times who also wrote The Book of Heroic Failures, was apparently fed up of going all the way to Edinburgh to the Arts Festival, so asked his friends where else they could hold an event. Someone suggested Nether Wallop. From there, the Nether Wallop International Arts Festival was born and in 1984 a host of stars of the time came together in a tent on the village playing fields including Bill Wyman, Jessye Norman, Jenny Agutter and Sir Michael Hordern. Comedians such as Rik Mayall, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Peter Cook, Billy Connolly, Mel Smith and Rowan Atkinson all took part and this paved the way for the first Comic Relief.

The area is known for its lovely walks and excellent trout fishing. There is a footpath behind the cottage which is ideal for dog walks, and fishing can be found 3 miles away (by prior arrangement only). There is an historic church dating back to the Saxon era, a playing field and a village tennis court about ½ mile away. The area is also renowned for the BBC version of Miss Marple and the front porch of Little Trout was actually used as the village chemist’s shop in the episode ’Murder at the Vicarage.’

Little Trout is 12 miles from the cathedral cities of Salisbury to the west and Winchester to the east, and within easy driving distance of the New Forest National Park. Other places to visit include Stonehenge, Mottisfont Abbey, Danebury Iron Age Hill Fort, Hinton Ampner, The Museum of Army Flying at Middle Wallop, Highclere Castle, Beaulieu Motor Museum, Buckler’s Hard, Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium, Wilton House and Thruxton Circuit. Stockbridge is about 4 miles away with a selection of shops, eateries and inns. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.
