There is lots you can do to work up an appetite and, although the kitchen at Caradon House simply begs to be used, foodies will find lots of reasons to eat out as Norfolk’s burgeoning good food reputation continues to grow. Great food can be found virtually on the doorstep and a little further afield with all tastes catered for, often using local produce. With bustling market towns, great walks, and cycle routes and so much to see and do, if you can tear yourself away from beautiful Caradon House, you really will be spoilt for choice. The market town of Downham Market, 2 miles, has Friday and Saturday markets, a supermarket, shops, bank, restaurants and boasts a direct rail link to Ely, Cambridge and London (in an hour and twenty minutes). The medieval town of Kings Lynn, 10 miles, is complete with handsome waterfront offering an array of good shops, inns, restaurants, a theatre, cinema, bowling alley and a sports centre. Both west and north Norfolk have an expanse of sandy beaches and salt marshes along the coastline, as well as nature reserves to protect the birds and plants which thrive here. The coastal road passes through many pretty rural villages, with popular tea rooms serving wonderful local food.
For those who enjoy a visit to the beach whilst on holiday, Snettisham Beach is the closest at 30 minutes’ drive. Further along the coast road are the traditional seaside resorts of Hunstanton and Heacham, which boast beaches and an array of traditional seaside activities and attractions for all ages. Hunstanton, 24 miles, has a pier with lively seasonal entertainment, a Sea Life Centre and cliff-top golf course. Heacham, 22 miles, is home to Norfolk Lavender and visitors may participate in guided tours of the expanse of lavender fields to observe the harvesting. Sandringham Estate,- the Queen’s country residence, with its Jacobean-style house, museum, superb gardens and park, are open to the public when the Royal Family is not in residence. To the south lies Ely Cathedral, known as the Ship of the Fens. This small city has an excellent Saturday market and a good variety of gift shops, as well as a pretty waterfront and boat hire.
The historic city of Cambridge is easily accessible for the day, and well worth a visit. One of the nicest ways to explore the city is by punt, which meanders through the city and passes many of the stunning university grounds. There are also many shops, pubs, restaurants, and theatres. Norwich, famous for its cathedral, is also within easy reach, and not to be missed. Don’t miss the famous mustard shop there as well, with many new and old varieties of mustard that can be purchased. Visit Wells-next-the-Sea with its excellent colourful beach huts and dine at the picturesque fishing harbour – popular for its fresh shellfish, beach hut available for guests by prior arrangement with the owner. The traditional seaside towns of Heacham and Hunstanton are close by offering an array of activities for all ages. Enjoy a day out in the city of Norwich with its market, excellent shopping malls and theatre. Visit the famous Norfolk Broads where daily boat hire and river trips are available to explore the expanse of waterways - a natural haven for birds and wildlife. Ely, with its imposing cathedral, named ’The Ship of the Fens’, is a bustling small city that also boasts a stained glass museum and Oliver Cromwell’s House. The Hanseatic port of old Kings Lynn is a popular destination too, as is the medieval city of Norwich with its fine Norman castle. Those wishing for quieter pursuits will enjoy the Welney Wetland Centre; within an hour beach lovers can be on the Norfolk coast, and history lovers can be at the Sandringham Estate. After a busy day you can either retire to the peaceful garden or stoke up the fire, and relax and unwind while planning your next adventure. Beach 35 miles. The Manor House, part of which dates back to the 1800s with much of the property alot older, has been thoughtfully restored to retain much of its period charm, with interesting features throughout. Head east to Holkham beach, which was featured in Shakespeare in Love, and the popular village of Wells-next-the-Sea with its picturesque quay, narrow gauge railway and quaint mix of artisan and traditional seaside shops, cafés and amusements. Further along the coast lies Blakeney, Cley, Sheringham and Cromer with its famous Edwardian promenade and pier.
Pretty coastal villages, many of which offer artisan shops and great places to eat, salt marshes and beaches can be found to the west. The Victorian town of Hunstanton, with it’s famous stripy cliffs, has a beach that really does seem to go on forever and here you will find a small funfair, Sealife Centre and lots of traditional seaside amusements. Aptly named ‘Royal Norfolk’ has lots of stately homes and National Trust properties, including The Sandringham Estate, Peckover House and Gardens, Holkham Hall and Blickling Hall. History lovers should try to squeeze in a visit to the medieval city of Norwich, with it’s magnificent Norman castle and numerous museums, or perhaps visit the hanseatic quarter of Old Kings Lynn, which offers historical tours and, for the brave, ghost walks. There are many opportunities for bird watching at Titchwell Marsh, Scolt Head Island and Cley Marshes, and lots of great cycling routes and beautiful coastal walks. The surrounding area has lots of great places to eat out, many of which serve fresh local produce, but those wishing for a relaxing night in will be spoilt for choice too, with a state of the art kitchen and a pizza oven in the grounds.
