Royal Sandringham House and Gardens are 27 miles. The city of Norwich, 23 miles, with its cathedral, castle museum, excellent shopping malls, market square, theatre, fine dining, cafés and pubs.     There is a lot of history associated with the site. In 1379, John Blakeneye, citizen and fishmonger of London, bought the manor of Hempstead, including the Hole Farmlands, from John de Stodeye, Lord Mayor of London, and by the mid 15th century, many of the farm buildings were built. Owned by the second Earl of Buckinghamshire in the mid 1700s, it later became part of the Blickling Estate. In 1884, the estate, now run by Lady Constance Lothian, had some major alterations and rebuilding at Hole Farm. These improvements included both the repairing of all the buildings in the original farmyard and the creation of a cattle yard. In fact, the old walls for the cattle yard now provide the shelter for the lovely seasonal, outdoor, heated swimming pool; (guests should bring their own swimming towels). There is also a shared tennis court (please bring your own rackets and balls).
    The family who now own the property, have planted 60 acres of woodland and 8½ miles of hedges and the farm has won many conservation and forestry awards. The setting is just lovely as it’s nestled within the beautiful North Norfolk countryside. It’s a 15-minute drive to the stunning coastline where you will find yourself amongst beautiful sandy and shingle beaches, marsh habitats and picturesque quays. Take a trip to Cromer and walk along the Edwardian promenade or take a stroll along the pier. Head to Blakeney for the Norfolk pursuit of gillie catching. Blickling Estate is just 15 minutes away, but don’t forget to find time to visit Holkham Hall and the Sandringham Estate too. History lovers will also enjoy a trip to the Thursford Military and Muckleburgh Steam collections museums, a trip on the North Norfolk Railway or a guided tour of Norwich Castle. Just 40 minutes away lies Wroxham, the gateway to the Norfolk Broads, where you can join a chartered tour or rent a day launch and watch the world drift by. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are numerous walks nearby making the property ideal for walkers, dog owners, bird and wildlife enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys being in the countryside and also near to the coast. There are many lovely walks in and around the Glaven Valley from nearby Bayfield Hall, Glandford, Wiveton and Hunworth.

    The attractive Georgian town of Holt is just over a mile away, where you can enjoy discovering its many original shops, galleries and cafés, often tucked away in hidden corners. If you like, you can walk to Holt from the cottage along a footpath with lovely views back over the Glaven Valley. You can also explore Holt Country Park, a 100-acre woodland with picnic areas, nature trails and a playground or catch a Poppy Line steam or diesel train to Weybourne and Sheringham from the North Norfolk railway station just outside Holt in the season. In July, Holt Festival brings the best in street performers, musicians, poets, actors, dancers, artists and comedians to the town.

    Middle Cottage is also 4½ miles from the coast at Blakeney. Explore the varied and beautiful North Norfok coast from the vast sandy beaches of Wells and Holkham, to the wild beauty of the salt marshes at Cley, Morston and Stiffkey and the traditional seaside resorts of Sheringham and Cromer.
