Lake Semerwater is nearby and offers activities such as coarse and wild brown trout fishing, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing or simply a lovely place to take a picnic and sit and enjoy the views and wildlife. The Yorkshire Dales offer spectacular scenery and an abundance of walks of all ability levels to explore. From the house itself there are beautiful walks along the banks of the nearby River Ure and the Askrigg Waterfalls Walk, which takes in both Whitfield Force and Mill Gill Force. For the more adventurous, longer walks and climbs in Wensleydale and Swaledale are within easy reach. The Yorkshire Three Peaks can be accessed from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, 40-minute drive away. For more restful days, there is so much to see and do within an easy distance. Picturesque Aysgarth Falls and Castle Bolton are nearby, and the market towns of Leyburn and Hawes are a short drive away. The Forbidden Corner in Middleham, a quirky venue with its labyrinth of caves, folly and underground caverns, is 13 miles away, and is hugely popular with families. Syke Cottage, dating back to the 1700s, is furnished to a high standard and generously equipped with everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The cottage retains its original charm while offering a high level of comfort with a modern country style.
The fully-equipped kitchen with an adjoining dining area provides thoughtful extras such as air fryer, slow cooker, coffee machine and juicer. The attractive lounge offers the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the Dales. The Ercol sofas invite you to unwind in front of the wood burner or indulge in a boxset or film on the large Smart TV with Netflix. The cottage has the added benefit of a cosy snug with a TV, Netflix, Wii games console and a great supply of board games. The stunning garden room with a vaulted ceiling offers a second dining area overlooking the patio. Here you will also find the washing machine, an additional fridge/freezer, a microwave, and room for bike storage. An additional shower room and toilet adjoin. On the first floor, there are three comfortable bedrooms. The master bedroom has a deluxe super king-size bed and an en-suite shower room. The bed can also be made up as two full-size singles on request. The second bedroom offers a luxurious kingsize bed and the third bedroom has twin single beds. A travel cot and bed safety rail are available. In the family bathroom, you will find a bath with a drench shower over. Outside, guests can enjoy the enclosed south-facing patio courtyard with bench and dining furniture –a perfect suntrap in which to enjoy a morning coffee or a lazy afternoon. There is room on the patio/driveway for one medium-sized car and an electric vehicle charger (payment via honesty box).
Syke Cottage is nestled in a quiet location just off the scenic village green, which is the perfect spot to soak up the breath-taking views while children play on the playground or football pitch. Within the village there is a fantastic tearoom, a small grocery store, a garage, a butcher, a tea-room/bakery and a twice-weekly Post Office. The 15th-century pub serves food and local ales, and a 2 AA rosette restaurant on the edge of the village offers fine dining.
Bainbridge is a central base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales. There is a variety of boutique shops, pubs and eateries in nearby Hawes (less than 10 mins drive), not least the renowned Wensleydale Creamery with its specialist cheese shop, museum and restaurant. For walkers and cyclists, there are routes leading off from Bainbridge in all directions. Semerwater, perfect for picnicking, swimming and boating, is only 2 miles away and easily reached by foot or by car. Head over to the famous Buttertubs and pass into Swaledale for yet more breath-taking scenery. Heading in the opposite direction towards the market town of Leyburn you will pass through a multitude of picture postcard villages and historic attractions. Aysgarth Falls, Bolton Castle, The Forbidden Corner and a ride on the Wensleydale steam railway (to name but a few) all make for great days out. Local amenities including a shop, pub and café are all within a few minutes’ walk of Syke Cottage.
