Just north of Whitby there are the resorts of Sandsend and Staithes, and to the south the much larger resort of Scarborough.
Whitby is famous for the Whitby Jet jewellery. Meander along the cobbled streets or climb the 199 steps to the famous Whitby Abbey where you have fantastic views along the coastline. There are plenty of good restaurants, bars and local pubs in the centre as well as the shops and galleries. The beach is a large sandy beach with donkeys waiting their turn to be picked by the children. The North Yorkshire Moors steam railway travels from Whitby to the market town of Pickering, stopping off at Grosmont. A great base for a perfect holiday. Beach 400 yards.
