Kielder itself is part of the Northumberland National Park with miles of forests the park is the largest Dark Sky Park in Europe, perfect for astronomers and photographers at any level. This area is a star gazers paradise with loungers in the garden to observe these fantastic night skies. The nearby observatory (booking is a must), is only 5 mins away, and is a great experience for all ages.
The waterparks around Kielder Water offer a hop on/off ferry, Bird of Prey Centre, cafés, pub, picnic areas and water sports of all types. The whole area is just perfect for mountain biking, cycling, walking and fishing. Day trips from Kielder Kip Cottage make a nice change, and Alnwick Castle, 50 miles, is famed for its scenes in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.
The very historic Hadrian’s Wall is a step back to the Roman times and plenty of museums and history await. The small town of Bellingham is 18 miles away, and has several shops, pubs and cafés. Kielder Winter Wonderland is a popular event every December for all ages. Kielder Kip Cottage would be a great base, with its cosy wood burner to welcome you back on the winter evenings and its fabulous free standing bath for a luxurious and relaxing soak after your chosen exercise. Railway Cuttings melds traditional with contemporary to make it the perfect location for those wishing to get away and unwind. This elegant stone-built, semi-detached, single-storey cottage is situated at Falstone Station. Along with the owner’s home it is one of only a few cottages at this location, which was once part of the former Border Counties Railway line. The line has long gone but reminders of the route that linked England with Scotland are still there. It is only 520 yards from the local pub serving real ale and good food. Opposite the pub is a small tea room/shop in this pretty village of Falstone. The cottage has one double and one twin bedroom and sleeps four people in an elegant style. The underfloor heating will keep you comfortable whatever the time of year. The décor is contemporary and comfortable with a kitchen area that has everything you’ll need to make your stay enjoyable and relaxing.

Old Kielder Castle Cottage lies in the prettiest part of the village of Kielder, directly opposite the castle, which can be admired from the large enclosed garden. Visitors to Kielder village and surrounding area are spoilt for choice, as the area is a paradise for mountain bikers, cyclists, walkers, fishermen and water enthusiasts. It is ideally located for stargazers and photographers, as this semi-detached holiday cottage is close to the Kielder Observatory. The castle houses a visitor centre, with a licensed café featuring a webcam to capture the ospreys and wildlife, and also holds varied exhibitions throughout the seasons.
The cottage has been sympathetically restored from a 1775 stable for the castle, into a contemporary cottage, which is ideal for couples or small families. Relax in the large bath after a day’s cycling or walking, or curl up on the comfy sofa and watch a film in front of the cosy wood burner. The rear area has a pretty tiered patio area for extra privacy to relax and unwind. The open beams, underfloor heated stone floors and wood burner all help to retain the character of the cottage.
Kielder is set in the Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park, the largest expanse of dark sky in Europe, perfect for astronomers. The surrounding parks all have something to offer visitors. There is a hop on/off ferry which takes you all around the water to admire the stunning scenery with a visitor centre, bird of prey centre and bar with picnic tables along the front.
The local pub and licensed café are only a short walk away, which means you can leave your car behind and enjoy a quiet drink with friends. This property is within a great location for exploring the abundance of visitor attractions in what is reputedly the friendliest and least inhabited county in England. Hadrian’s Wall and the Northumberland Heritage Coast (Alnwick Castle only 50 miles) make great days out and are easily drivable. Other astronomical phenomena you can look out for during your stay include the Aurora Borealis (more commonly known as the Northern Lights), and the occasional spectacular meteor shower. These shooting stars are grains of dust from the tails of comets burning up when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. To continue your stargazing odyssey there is the Kielder Observatory. This hugely popular attraction is located on the top of Black Fell, just up the road near Kielder Village, and is run by the Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society. The nearby town of Wooler is set along the last leg of the journey, so you needn’t traverse the full length. Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. If you fancy something exciting, why not visit Chillingham Castle, only a short drive away, and book onto one of their ghost tours! Why not try something a little different? Discover your inner country-self and try clay pigeon shooting at Fowberry Moor Farm in Wooler, where they also offer wine tasting!
A 20-minute drive brings you to the popular village of Bamburgh a stunningly attractive small village set on the northern stretch of the Northumberland Coast. It is without doubt dominated by its magnificently striking castle that can be seen for miles around. Why not hit the waves yourself with a trip to the Farne Islands? Take a boat trip from Seahouses and see the Medieval Pele Tower and Victorian Lighthouse, as well as the famous seabird colony. Depending on the time of year, you might catch a glimpse of the friendly seals and puffins that visit the islands’ shores. Golfers flock to Bamburgh, where the Bamburgh Castle Golf Club offers a particularly picturesque round. It’s short but tough and boasts some of the best views in the country! Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.

Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.

Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed. Whilst on the island, a trip to The Museum of Island Life will reveal former living and working conditions there, and St Aidan’s Winery tempts visitors with its sweet concoction of local Lindisfarne Mead.
There are quiet country lanes for cycling and several excellent golf courses nearby, as well as a selection of shops in Belford (3 miles) and good inns and restaurants in which to enjoy a family meal locally – the nearest pub with restaurant being just 30 yards.
