    West Cinder Hill is nestled away in the tiny village of Finsthwaite. It has the timeless quality of a place where very little has changed in a century. Enjoy the sound of owls by night from the nearby woods, and by day the gentle sound of sheep and hens. A local beauty spot is High Dam within walking distance and at the end of the village. This small man-made lake is perfect for picnics and allows access onto the fells with fabulous walks and views across to the Langdales and to the Coniston Range of fells. High Dam provided water for the old Bobbin Mill, now a tourist attraction in the village, but once providing employment to 250 men and boys.

    West Cinder Hill, it is rumoured, once was the centre of the local rhubarb trade. A large garden remains, on two levels, providing a perfect sanctuary and wonderful views across the valley. Converted from a barn in the 1970s, it has been recently refurbished to a high standard and is the perfect springboard for visiting central and south west Lakes. A steamer calls just a mile or two away, on the shore of Lake Windermere, which takes you to Bowness/Windermere town and further to Ambleside. Adjacent to the jetty is an aquarium, and a short distance away is an impressive motor museum. There is also a steam railway running the short distance from Lake Windermere to Haverthwaite. You come to a useful study room first which offers a little privacy or peace and quiet, and opposite is a utility room providing the perfect place to kick off muddy boots and wet coats after a busy day’s walking in the Lakes. A second set of doors open into an impressive, Instagram-worthy living space, with high vaulted ceilings, large leaded windows, and oak beams. Once you catch your breath, you can take in the large kitchen with all the amenities and space required to cater anything from a simple sandwich to a family feast. The breakfast bar is the ideal place to watch the chef show off their skills whilst enjoying a glass of wine before moving the feast to the large dining table, where you could easily imagine you were starring in an epic movie during a medieval banquet.
