Whilst exploring this area you are close to Grange-over sands, a Victorian seaside town with many shops and cafés to enjoy. South Lakes Safari Zoo is also within easy reach and worth a visit.
Backbarrow is the perfect base to explore the lakes, whether you are planning to enjoy walking a few of the 214 Wainwrights fells, cycling the fantastic roads around here or driving over to many other popular towns around Cumbria including Ulverston, Ambleside, Coniston, Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere, then you really are spoilt for choice! The cottage was once a thriving gunpowder works dating back to 1798 and part of Low Wood Mill gunpowder works located on the estuary with access to the sea, now only the cottages and the clock tower survives today as a reminder of the past.
