Situated halfway between Dundee and Aberdeen it is an ideal place to make the most of the diverse attractions of the east coast. The town itself boasts a wonderful sandy beach with a great children’s play area and the wide links between the coast and the town are the setting for its two good golf courses. Sitting on the edge of the Montrose Basin, an almost enclosed estuary of the River Esk which flows out through the bustling harbour to the sea, it is renowned for its wildlife centre. Every autumn, watch the stunning spectacle of thousands of pink footed geese arriving from Scandinavia to spend the winter here. For the more energetic, there is a great cycle path network in the area allowing visitors to explore the countryside. There is a huge variety of wildlife to be seen, including red squirrels, woodpeckers, owls and ospreys, whilst the River Southesk is home to salmon and even freshwater pearls. Within the immediate grounds of the castle there are many paths laid out for guests, leading to follies and fine views on the way to the river and estate lake. Enjoy a barbecue or a game of tennis on the private court, or take a leisurely cycle on one of the many quiet roads which cross through the estate.

The most recent addition to the collection, Kingfisher Cottage (UK38211) is a renovated, detached, single-storey luxury cottage, tucked way down a farm track. With two stylish bedrooms and beautiful quality furnishings throughout, the high ceilinged open plan living room/kitchen features an eyecatching wood burner flanked by full length picture windows, making the most of the view for the ultimate relaxing experience. Islabank Farmhouse (ref SAAP) is a traditional, characterful, comfortable farmhouse which is ideal for families. This gorgeous archetypal stone cottage is in a blissful rural retreat, set amongst the rolling hills and Glens beyond Kirriemuir. With hens, pet sheep, two horses and calves in the surrounding fields, you will feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The interior is sumptuous and welcoming with a cosy wood burner in the open plan lounge/kitchen to greet you in after a busy day out, while all interior wood and the kitchen worktops have been custom made using the timber from an oak tree that fell naturally in the grounds of the property. The bedrooms are spacious with zip and link kingsize beds in the downstairs bedroom, and kingsize sleigh bed in the upper room, accessed via a wrought iron spiral staircase with a glass balustrade and gallery overlooking the lounge.
The bathroom has a separate shower with a monsoon shower head and a lovely bath to soak in and soothe aching limbs. Outside, there is an enclosed lawn to the front as well as a raised patio with a fabulous hot tub where you can sit and look up at the stars. The owner thoughtfully provides robes for you. Perfect.

If you can tear yourself away, the area has much to offer the visitor. There are great walks accessible nearby, through Glen Prosen and Clova or magnificent walking, bird-watching, mountain biking, and further afield, downhill skiing at Glen Shee (25 miles). Kirriemuir is just a short drive away and is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Kirriemuir is at the foot of the Angus Glens and on the perimeter of the Cairngorm National Park, and there are plenty of interesting shops and eateries in the town.

Druid’s Knowe sits in a superb position on the outskirts of the little hamlet of Tarfside, in the heart of Glen Esk.
Surrounded by gorgeous scenery this wonderful house has been totally and sympathetically refurbished and modernised right down to the last detail, but still retaining its original character. The museum is dedicated to the heritage, history and culture of Glenesk and focuses on the life of the rural community. At the bottom of the glen you can travel the length of the Victorian Heritage Trail, passing through Fettercairn with its Gothic Arch and local Distillery (where tours can be taken) up through Cairn o’ Mount and into Royal Deeside, ending at Balmoral Castle.
There is ample fishing and golf in the area as well as some good eating places or why not visit the beautiful beaches on the east coast at Montrose, Lunan Bay and St Cyrus.
