Montrose is a pleasant market town with lots of interesting avenues and closes, many of which have a story to tell about the history of the place.
Situated halfway between Dundee and Aberdeen it is an ideal place to make the most of the diverse attractions of the east coast. The town itself boasts a wonderful sandy beach with a great children’s play area and the wide links between the coast and the town are the setting for its two good golf courses. Sitting on the edge of the Montrose Basin, an almost enclosed estuary of the River Esk which flows out through the bustling harbour to the sea, it is renowned for its wildlife centre. Every autumn, watch the stunning spectacle of thousands of pink footed geese arriving from Scandinavia to spend the winter here. For the more energetic, there is a great cycle path network in the area allowing visitors to explore the countryside. For walking enthusiasts the 5 Glens of Esk, Clova, Glenisla, Glenprosen and Glen Lethnot are within very easy reach; all have their own magic. With its warm, welcoming interior, Muirton of Ardovie cottage is the perfect quiet spot to relax after a day exploring the local area. Boasting lovely views from the lounge over the fields and beyond to Montreathmont Forest, home to a host of wildlife, including the elusive capercaillie, as well as buzzards, owls, woodcock, cuckoos and deer. The extensive network of tracks and paths on the doorstep make this location perfect for walkers, mountain bikers and those who simply enjoy time away from it all. A pond attracting swans and ducks, just a few hundred yards from the cottage, provides another tranquil spot to enjoy.
Although wonderfully peaceful, the house is only 4 miles from the city of Brechin, the only city in Angus, on account of its medieval cathedral. Brechin has plenty to offer the visitor; fans of the steam locomotive will enjoy a visit to the Caledonian Railway and Brechin Castle Centre, a 70- acre country park, has a great shop, restaurant and garden centre as well as many outdoor activities for children including a fantastic play area and fairy trail. Nearby Aberlemno has links to the Harley Davidson family at Netherton Cottage, their original home. The village is also home to four stones with Pictish carvings, dating between about AD 500 and 800.
The area has a special but hidden history as the location of the Montreathmont Camp Radio Station in World War II and as Airship Station in WW1. The listening and radio station began as a secret listening post and codebreaking centre which operated as an outstation of Bletchley Park during World War II and continued to monitor communications during the Cold War. The remains of the mooring pits for the WW1 Airships can also be found in the woodland.
There are many walking routes for all abilities through the scenic Angus Glens while the magnificent beaches at Montrose, Lunan and St Cyrus are a sight to behold and have an abundance of wildlife including seals, pink footed geese, dolphins, otters and birds. From paddleboarding, kayaking and golfing, to boat trips and long walks in the Glens and along the coast, Angus offers many energetic and entertaining experiences. Surrounded by gorgeous scenery this wonderful house has been totally and sympathetically refurbished and modernised right down to the last detail, but still retaining its original character. This is a perfect property if you love the great outdoors, appreciate the splendour of the Scottish countryside and are looking for rest and relaxation in an unspoilt and peaceful location.
The interior features a living room with wood burner on open plan to a well fitted kitchen, three double bedrooms (one on the ground floor) and two bathrooms, while outside there are gardens front and back, where you can sit and soak up the peace and quiet. Tarfside and Glenesk are good starting points for some excellent walks amongst stunning scenery and diverse wildlife. A few miles west of Tarfside is Mount Keen, Scotland’s most easterly Munro. Just along from the house is Glenesk Retreat and Folk Museum, gift shop and an art gallery. The museum is dedicated to the heritage, history and culture of Glenesk and focuses on the life of the rural community. At the bottom of the glen you can travel the length of the Victorian Heritage Trail, passing through Fettercairn with its Gothic Arch and local Distillery (where tours can be taken) up through Cairn o’ Mount and into Royal Deeside, ending at Balmoral Castle.
