The Smithy of Longcastle whilst set in a delightful rural area amidst rolling farmland is just few miles from the small village of Whauphill and only 5 miles from the coast and the lovely little village of Port William, known as the “Machars of Galloway” has a rugged coastline and boasts stunning views over Luce Bay to the Mull of Galloway and the Isle of Man. Wigtown, Scotland’s very own book town, is well worth a visit where you can enjoy a few hours absorbed in the many and varying book shops.
Enjoy the rugged coastlines and secluded sandy beaches which benefit from the warmth of the passing Gulf Stream and must is a visit to the world-renowned Logan Botanical Garden with its many exotic plants and trees. The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Galloway Forest, home to the 7 Stanes Kirroughtree and Glentrool mountain bike trails, numerous lochs and the Galloway hills is only a short drive away. One of the UK’s only Dark Skies Park is close by with its superb dark skies at night and is well worth visiting. There are many walking and cycling trails on your doorstep, as well as golf, sailing, fishing and riding. With a wealth of things to do in the area, The Smithy of Longcastle is the perfect location. Loch View is a beautiful three bedroomed home situated on the popular Wig Bay Holiday Park and is the ideal place for families and couples to enjoy the stunning surrounding area. Situated on the western shores of Loch Ryan in beautiful Galloway, in one of the most desirable locations in the area, boasting breath taking loch views. Loch View is set back quietly on this lovely family run park and the beautiful interior is very appealing with the open plan living room with comfortable sofas, dining room and kitchen which comes well-equipped with a gas oven, hob and microwave. Outside on the decking you can soak up the sun it makes the perfect spot for your morning coffee or a nice glass of chilled wine. The park has something to cater for all ages the indoor soft play area or swimming pool (booking required) for the kids or the on-site bar and restaurant where you can enjoy a lovely meal.
This is the perfect location to explore the area. Visit Dally Bay where seals and porpoises can be spotted. Literally just cross the road take a walk to the shore on Loch Ryan and around Wig Bay and The Scar, a circular walk along the loch’s shoreline and back into the village of Kirkcolm. The Scar is a sandbank which juts out into Loch Ryan, and home to one of the largest colonies of nesting migrant terns in the region. From a historical perspective, during the Second World War, Wig Bay was used as a base for the flying Catalina boats, evidence can be seen of this on a walk along the bay. Noted for its spectacular coastline, the area provides a vast range of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast to include wonderful walks, coarse and sea fishing as well as shooting, sailing, coastal rowing and cycling and several excellent golf courses. Stranraer is just a few miles away where there are an array of shops and restaurants and the kids will love Agnew Park with its pedal boats, train rides, adventure playground and crazy golf.

Whilst staying at Lime tree Cottage, visit the majestic Drumlanrig Castle with its 90,000-acre estate which boasts miles of beautiful walks and acres of ornate gardens. Not only can you take a tour of the castle, but you can experience championship mountain biking trails, fish for salmon and the kids can enjoy the adventure playground and ranger-led wildlife walks. Beattock is situated 2 miles from Moffat, a vibrant and bustling little town which attracts visitors throughout the year. With pathways from Broomlands why not take a walk into Moffat on a fine day and have a wander around the many speciality shops and cafés in the town. Of course you must sample the famous Moffat Toffee. Set in the heart of Upper Annandale amidst the beautiful southern upland hills it is a walker’s paradise with many routes starting from the town and taking in some beautiful lochs and valleys along the way. Broomlands Cottage is the ideal base to explore further afield but before you do take a short drive up to the Grey Mares Tail one of Scotland’s favourite water falls plunging 60 metres into the valley below, a spectacular sight.
As well as the hills and valleys, South West Scotland has more than 200 miles of fabulous coastline for you to discover with delightful little seaside towns and villages, beautiful beaches and dramatic cliff top walks. The cottage is a short drive from Wigtown, which is famous for being Scotland’s National Book Town, a book lovers haven. This is also a great destination for cycling, fishing and golfing with St Medans 9 hole golf course and beach just 1½ miles down the road. This is a fantastic area for walkers, whether you are interested in clifftop, beach, hills or forest walks. There is easy access to The Galloway Forest Park, with its tranquil valleys, rugged rock faces, forest, moorland, lochs and ancient woodland, as well as a huge diversity of wildlife including red and roe deer, wild goats and many birds of prey. The park has also been awarded the status of one of only four Dark Sky Parks in the western world and when the sun sets, enthusiasts come to wonder at the universe revealed above. Dalmellington, at the far end of the park, is home to the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory.
The town of Stranraer, only 30 minutes away, offers a selection of shops and restaurants; a short distance further is Cairnryan, where the ferry can be taken for a day trip to Ireland. Beach 2 miles. Shop 4½ miles, pub and restaurant 6 miles.
