The Lodge on the Beach is ideally placed to explore the wider and unspoilt area of South West Scotland if you can drag yourself away. A few minutes away by car is Glenluce, where there is a local shop selling essentials and 20 minutes away Stranraer offers a greater range of shops including Supermarkets. This area of Dumfries and Galloway boasts rugged coastlines and secluded sandy beaches as well as inland forests and hills making walking a delight and for the cyclists the world famous 7Stanes mountain biking trails are close by at Kirroughtree. The Lodge on the Beach is an ideal base for a Golfing Holiday. With Wigtownshire County Club less than ten minutes from the Lodge, and South West Scotland boasts twenty three Golf courses. The icing on the cake is that just over an hour away there is Turnberry.
Along the coast is the lovely little village of Port William, known as the “Machars of Galloway” and of course you must go and find “The Man” and get a photograph with him. As well as Port William, you can also explore quaint villages such as Sandhead, Portpatrick and the Isle of Whithorn. A must is a visit to Wigtown, which is famous for being Scotland’s National Book Town, a book lovers haven. The Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s most southerly point and home to the RSPB nature reserve, where thousands of seabird’s nests on the cliff face during spring and summer is definitely worth a visit. The Old Servants’ Hall forms part of the ground floor in the west wing of Dunragit House, a beautiful Grade B former mansion house which dates from the late 17th century. The Old Servants’ Hall, which is accessed by a private entrance in the walled courtyard to the rear of the House, has been carefully restored over the last eighteen months. Reflecting the character of the original architecture, it features much of the quaintly irregular features including original doors and sash windows, servants’ bell box and areas of previously concealed tongue and groove panelling. With books throughout, the utility air of the original ‘understairs’ area has been overlaid with vintage textiles, carefully selected furniture, kitchenware, and 21st century facilities to ensure a feeling of splendour. The Old Servants’ Hall is beautifully warm and cosy and is delightfully decorated throughout with stripped wood floors, antique Turkish rugs, an eclectic mix of mid-20th century and antique furniture and sumptuous bed and bedding. Dunragit House has extensive gardens, and paths to the surrounding woodland, rich in Snowdrops and Bluebells in the Spring, which guests are welcome to enjoy.
The Old Servants’ Hall provides an excellent base from which to explore the relatively undiscovered Galloway. Glenwahn Gardens, described as one of the most beautiful newly made gardens in Scotland, is just a ten minute walk away. From its elevated, secluded position, ’Up Yonder’ offers the ideal rural location from which to explore all aspects of Wigtownshire and the south west corner of Scotland. The village of Glenluce, with its pub, shop and abbey, is conveniently only a 5-minute walk away. The panoramic view from the upstairs living room balcony with its table and chairs looks out across Luce Bay to the Mull of Galloway, and is a fabulous spot for relaxing while watching the sun setting.
With close proximity to transport links, it makes touring all the region’s beautiful countryside and attractions accessible. These include the Rhinns of Galloway and Machars Peninsulas, with their lighthouses, wealth of culture, art, book and music festivals, historic buildings, wildlife and renowned gardens. A short distance inland is the Galloway Forest which offers exceptional walking and cycling opportunities while those nocturnally inclined, can experience the wonders of Britain’s premier Dark Sky Park. Sporting opportunities abound with river, loch and sea fishing and many fine golf courses within easy reach, Wigtownshire County Course being only a mile away.
Wigtownshire boasts a number of ambient small ports such as Portpatrick, Port William, Sandhead and Isle of Whithorn which are all only a short drive away. Stranraer and Newton Stewart offer a more varied shopping experience, while the Solway and Ayrshire coasts with their multitude of attractions are easily reached. A 20-minute drive from the property reaches the port of Cairnryan where regular ferries offer a day trip to Belfast and Northern Ireland.

This charming detached, single-storey cottage, with a beautiful garden, is situated only yards from the shore in the small hamlet of Kirkandrews. It is surrounded by stunning views over open countryside and only a couple of miles from the village of Borgue, with a local pub and restaurant. The nearest supermarket is 7½ miles away which offers a reliable delivery service.
Gullieside Cottage is situated only a short drive from the pretty harbour town of Kirkcudbright, locally known as the artists town, with many festivals throughout the year, including Scottish nights, classic car rallies, historic walks, a medieval fayre, a jazz festival and a spectacular Tattoo, as well as a good selection of pubs and restaurants. There is a large variety of outdoor pursuits on offer, including fishing, horse riding in Galloway Forest Park, cycling, golf and water sports. Threave Garden and Estate, owned by the National Trust, proves to be a popular visitor attraction.
