The Old Smithy is a truly unique, traditional, stone built terraced cottage right in the heart of the picturesque coastal town of Anstruther. It has been completely renovated into a welcoming holiday home, yet maintains the traditional character of the building and has incorporated modern and contemporary living style. Guests will find a spacious open plan living area with cosy sofas where you can relax and unwind, and a contemporary kitchen area fitted with good quality appliances and everything you will need to prepare a family meal. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor which overlook the living space and have sliding oak doors for privacy. There is also a shower room with a walk-in shower.

The harbour and port of Anstruther has a long and interesting history linked to The Old Smithy, and part of the building was built before 1730 and over time has been a stable, smithy and harbour store. It is located on Wightmans Wynd, which was named after Charles Wightman, a wealthy merchant and smuggler in the 1700’s and also a Jacobite sympathiser. He provided sanctuary for survivors from Culloden in the cellars adjacent to The Old Smithy. The building fell into disrepair, but in 2009 and due to its unique location and as a listed building, an architect took on the challenge of redesigning the cottage and won the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage in 2013.

With a sandy beach and most amenities just a minute from the door, this is a perfect location for a couple(s), friends or a small family who are looking to enjoy a seaside holiday or a walking, golfing or sightseeing break. Anstruther has much to do and many eateries to suit all tastes, from award-winning fish and chip shops to a Michelin star restaurant, as well as lots of cafés, traditional inns, ice cream shops, bakeries, gift shops and galleries. The working harbour has fishing boats as well as leisure crafts, including seasonal boat trips to the Isle of May (a national nature reserve). The old lanes and streets are interesting to explore on foot.

Follow the Fife Coastal Path that literally passes the front door and leads in either direction to secluded coves, little fishing villages and white sandy beaches. For exploring further afield, St Andrews is only 9 miles away and makes a great day out with excellent shopping facilities as well as lots of restaurants, pubs and bistros. Famous for being the home of golf, lovers of the sport will enjoy visiting the British Golf Museum or playing on one of the championship courses. In fact there are over 40 golf courses in Fife to choose from. The local area is home to some outstanding summer food and arts festivals as well as an annual lifeboat gala which provides great entertainment for all ages. There are many more interesting heritage and historic buildings in the vicinity, and a visit to The Scottish Fisheries Museum just along the harbour is well worth a visit. St Andrews itself is steeped in history and has a comprehensive range of shops, restaurants, tearooms, museum and the Sea Life Centre. Pittenweem is a charming fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife. The harbour is the main focus of the village, particularly early each morning when the fishing boats return with their catch and the daily fish market gets underway. Many of the picturesque houses around the harbour are of traditional Fife design with red pantile or grey-slate roofs with crow-step gables and have been restored by the National Trust for Scotland. This beautifully renovated cottage is part of a row of four terraced cottages. Dothan Farm Cottage is warm and welcoming, boosting of views from the back of the property overlooking the Falkland and Lomond hills along with open fields in the front. Great for couples or a family looking for a relaxing holiday or a base to explore the surrounding area.
Set all on one level, the bright and spacious lounge overlooks the open fields in front where there is a small open garden area for sitting and enjoying the sun. In the colder months, snuggle up with a cup of hot chocolate and a book in front of the lovely wood burner. The living room leads to the two comfy double bedrooms, shower room and the new modern kitchen.
The rear garden has a large patio area where you can enjoy the views over the fields and the Lomond Hills. It is set over three levels. The rear garden gives access to the shared parking area. The gardens are private but there are no dividing fences between the neighbours. Although access to the property is primarily gained from the rear where there are 23 steps leading up to the cottage, gaining access into the kitchen, you can also enter through the front door where there are no steps. There is a drop off area to the side of the property for those who may have difficulty with the steps.

Set in a peaceful location, surrounded by fields and a working farm, Kirkcaldy town centre is just three miles away and close to road links. Ideally for visiting Fife’s stunning coastal Path, Loch Lomond and Edinburgh. If you’re looking for a bit more activity, Cluny Activity Centre is right on your doorstep. Beach 4 miles. Little Gem is an attractive ground floor apartment situated on a quiet, very small, residential estate, beside Ravenscraig Castle and Park in the coastal town of Kirkcaldy. The apartment benefits from stunning views of the ancient castle and across the Firth of Forth. You can hear the waves lapping on the beach when the windows are open. An ideal location for a couple or small family at any time of the year the apartment is comfortable and well appointed. There is a king sized bed with a built-in TV in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room. The coffee table in the living room easily converts to a dining room table and the kitchen is well-equipped for preparing a meal. It is a joy to look out of either the living-room or kitchen window and see the views. There are also grass areas and shrubbery around this small estate.
A short stroll from the apartment takes you into Ravenscraig Park, which has beautiful coastal walks and plenty of facilities for children. You can follow the Fife Coastal Route in either direction, Dysart Harbour which featured on the TV series Outlander is only a 20-minute walk along the shore and the opposite direction to the attractive seaside towns of Burntisland and Aberdour, white sandy beaches and walks along the cliffs. Kirkcaldy has lots of place to eat and places to shop and a walk or jog along the esplanade is highly recommended. In April the town hosts Europe’s longest street fair, The Adam Smith Theatre offers a regular programme all year and Kirkcaldy Galleries is well worth a visit with national collections of work to view including local artist Jack Vettriano. A day out in Edinburgh is only 25 minutes away by train from the local station over the majestic Forth Rail Bridge into the city centre, ideal if you or attending one of the many shows, events and festivals throughout the year. Lightkeeper’s Rest is tucked away down a quiet lane in the harbour town of Anstruther and has been furnished and equipped to a very good standard to ensure as comfortable and relaxing holiday as possible. You enter the cottage into the attractive kitchen/dining room which has been equipped for preparing a family meal. There are two well presented bedrooms, one which has an en-suite shower room and kingsize bed, and the other with twin beds. The bright, first floor living room is cosy and welcoming with comfortable seating and sea views.
Just a short walk takes you to the bustling harbour front with local boats landing their catch and leisure boats. There is plenty of place along the front to take refreshment from local bar, cafés and an award-winning fish and chip restaurant. Anstruther has cobbled lanes and historic buildings to explore, as well as two sandy beaches and rock pools. From April to September there are daily ferries and boat trips leaving from the harbour side to the Isle of May National Nature Reserve, which is home to colonies of sea birds, including puffins, and the surrounding waters are the habitat of seal colonies, a great day out for all.
Enjoy lovely walks along the Fife Coast Path which passes through Anstruther, leading to secluded coves, picturesque fishing villages and award-winning white sandy beaches. For a day out, St Andrews is well worth a visit with lots to do to suit all ages. There is a Sea Life Centre, sandy beach and harbour, great shopping with local shops as well as high street names, restaurants, pubs, bistros, historic buildings and museums. If you like a round of golf on your holiday, St Andrews is world famous as being the home of golf, with a family-friendly course as well as championship courses to play. Even more locally, the charming 9-hole Anstruther course is a four minute walk from the cottage.
