The Old Smithy is a truly unique, traditional, stone built terraced cottage right in the heart of the picturesque coastal town of Anstruther. It has been completely renovated into a welcoming holiday home, yet maintains the traditional character of the building and has incorporated modern and contemporary living style. Guests will find a spacious open plan living area with cosy sofas where you can relax and unwind, and a contemporary kitchen area fitted with good quality appliances and everything you will need to prepare a family meal. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor which overlook the living space and have sliding oak doors for privacy. There is also a shower room with a walk-in shower.

The harbour and port of Anstruther has a long and interesting history linked to The Old Smithy, and part of the building was built before 1730 and over time has been a stable, smithy and harbour store. It is located on Wightmans Wynd, which was named after Charles Wightman, a wealthy merchant and smuggler in the 1700’s and also a Jacobite sympathiser. He provided sanctuary for survivors from Culloden in the cellars adjacent to The Old Smithy. The building fell into disrepair, but in 2009 and due to its unique location and as a listed building, an architect took on the challenge of redesigning the cottage and won the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage in 2013.

With a sandy beach and most amenities just a minute from the door, this is a perfect location for a couple(s), friends or a small family who are looking to enjoy a seaside holiday or a walking, golfing or sightseeing break. Anstruther has much to do and many eateries to suit all tastes, from award-winning fish and chip shops to a Michelin star restaurant, as well as lots of cafés, traditional inns, ice cream shops, bakeries, gift shops and galleries. The working harbour has fishing boats as well as leisure crafts, including seasonal boat trips to the Isle of May (a national nature reserve). The old lanes and streets are interesting to explore on foot.

Follow the Fife Coastal Path that literally passes the front door and leads in either direction to secluded coves, little fishing villages and white sandy beaches. For exploring further afield, St Andrews is only 9 miles away and makes a great day out with excellent shopping facilities as well as lots of restaurants, pubs and bistros. Famous for being the home of golf, lovers of the sport will enjoy visiting the British Golf Museum or playing on one of the championship courses. In fact there are over 40 golf courses in Fife to choose from. The local area is home to some outstanding summer food and arts festivals as well as an annual lifeboat gala which provides great entertainment for all ages. There are many more interesting heritage and historic buildings in the vicinity, and a visit to The Scottish Fisheries Museum just along the harbour is well worth a visit. This charming, bijou, terraced cottage with a red pantile roof, dating back to 1780 when it was a weavers cottage, is located in the centre of the historic picturesque village of Ceres. Well Cottage has been thoughtfully furnished for comfort and ease, and is the perfect location for a relaxing retreat for a couple. There are excellent cycling and footpaths from the cottage door and the Fife Folk Museum is across the road, as well as the village green. This conservation village has a good pub and a hotel serving food, tea rooms, an antique shop, a family butchers, village store and the renowned Wemyss Ware Pottery. Scotland’s oldest highland games are held on the last Saturday in June. The picture-postcard East Neuk of Fife with fishing villages and sandy beaches are within easy driving distance, and St Andrews is only seven miles away and well worth a visit. This area is renowned for its golf, with a multitude of excellent courses within easy reach. Trout fishing is available locally (licence required). Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth are all within an hour’s drive. When you return to the cottage after exploring the area, you can sit back with a glass of wine in front of the cosy fire. Renovated in 2018 to a very good standard, Arc House is a bright and spacious first and second floor apartment with rooftop views towards the sea. The first floor has a handy utility room with a washing machine and sink where guests can keep their outdoor gear and buckets and spades, a family bathroom and three comfortable bedrooms all with televisions. The second floor has a super open-plan living area, which is light and spacious, with a superbly fitted kitchen with a dual fuel range cooker. The living area has a cosy 6-seater sofa and is the ideal place to relax after a day by the sea. From the Velux windows, there is a roof top view towards Pittenweem and Largo Law. The property dates back to 1877, and the street is named after Captain Rodger, owner of the clipper ship, Taeping. The East Neuk of Fife has a long seafaring history and the Fisheries Museum tells the story of the area.

Just a short stroll from Arc House you can explore the old wynds and lanes leading down to the seafront in the picturesque fishing village of Cellardyke, with a sandy beach and old harbour. There is a water sports centre with sea kayaking and open canoeing available for you to explore the shore line with expert tuition. The Fife Coastal Path can be joined here, and in either direction you can enjoy fantastic coastal views over the Firth of Forth and which takes you to pretty fishing villages, secluded coves and white sandy beaches.

Anstruther is just a 5-minute walk away with its working harbour, local pubs, seafront coffee shops, fish and chip shops, galleries and shops. Just 9 miles away is St Andrews, which is well worth a visit with lots to do to suit all ages. Set in a picturesque lane, Kirkview Cottage is a traditional semi-detached cottage in the quiet village of Upper Largo, on the southern slopes of Largo Law. Within walking distance is the local hotel with a restaurant and bar, there are gentle walks out into the surrounding countryside. The beautiful sandy beach at Lower Largo is less than a mile away. For guests who enjoy walking, the Fife Coastal Path is easily accessible from the cottage, you can walk various sections of the coastal path and catch the coast bus back to the bus stop which is 200 yards from the cottage.
