Cullen is a wonderful little village, a real treasure trove of cute shops and cafés, and a perfect place to spend some time. Don’t forget to try the local speciality, Cullen skink. The neighbouring villages are well worth a visit and golf can be found nearby also. Further afield, Elgin and Inverness can be reached easily for a day out. Beach ¼ mile. Spey Bay is home to the National Whale and Dolphin Centre and is a wonderful area for spotting many species of wildlife including minke whales, bottlenose dolphins, ospreys, seals and much more. There are spectacular views over the sea towards the mountains of Caithness from the long shingle beach, and the world famous Spey Bay Golf Club is at the other end. For walkers, the Speyside Way passes close by and runs from Buckie on the shore of the Moray coast to Aviemore. The Whisky Trail is nearby and there are good fishing opportunities on the River Spey itself. If all this activity is too much, just relax by the woodburner and enjoy the peace. Beach 1 mile. Portknockie is a great place for walkers and those who love to take in the local scenery. The neighbouring village of Cullen, about 2 miles away, is very much worth a visit. The local delicacy of cullen skink (a thick soup made with smoked haddock, potatoes and onions) is very historical and a great dish to try. You can take a boat trip on the Gemini Explorer to search for dolphins in the Moray Firth from Buckie, a working fishing town about 4 miles away. Or, further afield at Spey Bay, you will find the popular Scottish Dolphin Centre and Nature Reserve. The famous Speyside Whisky Trail is also within easy reach and should not be missed.

The clear waters here are the base for a resident colony of bottlenose dolphins, and there are several companies in the vicinity running wildlife cruises, when you may also spot seals, many seabirds and even whales. Golf enthusiasts have a lovely links course practically on the doorstep, which has stunning views over the bay. Local dishes include Cullen skink, a hearty chowder-like fish soup; the nearby Cullen Bay Hotel holds the title of World Champion for this tasty dish! Moray is also known for its whisky, and there are many famous distilleries within an hour’s drive of the village. Cullen has a great variety of local amenities, good pubs and cafés, as well as a fabulous ice cream shop opposite the property. There is plenty to do here for all ages and abilities.
