The local bus, which operates between Shrewsbury and Ellesmere, collects and drops off on Springfield Barn main drive allowing guests to leave the car behind.

Just down the road is the larger village of Pontesbury, where you will find a supermarket, chemist, Post Office, butchers and plenty of smaller interesting shops, plus three good pubs to enjoy a meal out one evening. Alternatively spend the day in the bustling and historical town of Shrewsbury, birthplace of Charles Darwin. Famed for its intriguing ‘Shuts and Passages’ and overlooked by Shrewsbury Castle, home to the Shropshire Regimental Museum, the town nestles in the crook of the River Severn. The Quarry parkland follows the length of the river and features ‘The Dingle’; an outstanding formal garden and water feature with lots of seating for relaxing and taking in the view. With museums, the Theatre Severn and numerous independent shops and places to eat, the town has plenty to offer all ages. Within a short distance you can also find the towns of Much Wenlock and Ludlow and various sites of historic interest. The Byre is nestled away on a quiet farm, a great choice for family’s or friends looking to escape and reconnect with nature. Located in the village of Northwood, in between Wem and Ellesmere, the property offers excellent access to surrounding areas each offering many attractions. Just down the road is one of Shropshire’s most beautiful meres, Colemere. It is almost surrounded by mature woodland and has two very attractive hay meadows to explore.
Shropshire has many special landscapes including the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Stiperstones and Corndon Hill Country crossing the border in the southwest of the county and the internationally important Meres and Mosses in the north. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site also includes part of Shropshire around Chirk in the north.
There are several towns just a short drive from Top House Farm which make a great day out. Why not stroll around the town of Shrewsbury, it is neatly scooped up in the loop of the River Severn. Inside the loop are Medieval streets lined with wonky buildings containing original and one-off shops and street names that truly tell a story - look out for Butcher Row, Fish Street and Grope Lane or a little further in the other direction is Chester. When it comes to beautiful cities, Chester is one of the best and should be on every tourist’s ‘must see’ itinerary.

Orchard Barn lies on the grounds of the owners working farm, a converted cow shed which has been tastefully decorated throughout and offers home from home comfort in the glorious surroundings of the rolling hills of mid Wales. It has a great open plan living space with Smart TV and French doors leading to the patio area, whilst the kitchen comes with integrated appliances and a sizeable breakfast bar! The ground floor bedroom has an en-suite and the first floor twin room has its own bathroom. The large garden is enclosed, however those with small pets will need to be mindful that their dogs may get through the post and rail fence that surrounds the property.
Walks can be had straight from the front door of the property, if you are bringing your four-legged friend they will have plenty of space to roam. The village of Pen-Y-Bont is just 3 miles away and has a pub serving food. Further down the road in Crossgates there is a café, launderette and service station. The town of Llandrindod Wells is 8 miles and has an abundance of shops, restaurants and interesting walks and a fabulous lake that you can take a stroll round whilst listening to the local wildlife. Offa’s Dyke, a famous walking trail, is only a 20-minute drive, and there are plenty of other scenic walks nearby. The Royal Welsh showground, 15 miles, has lots to offer in the way of events and shows, not forgetting the famous Royal Welsh Show in July.
