Old Orchard Barn - The Annexe is a beautiful converted property in the heart of Buckland St Mary, a gorgeous Somerset village, yet within easy access to the A303. Inside it has been lovingly converted as a relaxing holiday retreat for two to feature a cosy living area with electric wood burner and Smart TV, although with the large windows gazing out over the rolling fields you may never need to switch it on! The living room is open plan with the kitchen although this is up a step, giving it a slightly separate feel. The kitchen is well-equipped with an oven, hob, microwave and fridge/freezer, and there is a wonderful dining area making the most of the views. Into the bedroom you have an oak kingsize bed with bamboo mattress, Egyptian cotton bedding and an oak dressing table, as well as a hanging area for your clothes, off the bedroom there is a fabulously colourful en-suite with shower cubicle. Outside there is a private garden area with seating and views, perfect for a glass of wine as the sun goes down, there is also a private outdoor swimming pool available from 10am until 4pm (May-Sep only) and shared use of the tennis court - bring your own tennis rackets and tennis shoes (white soles only).
The property is located within the Blackdown Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the Somerset, Devon and Dorset border. There are some beautiful walks in the area, and a Covid-19 secure country public house less than ½ mile away, as well as an Italian restaurant ½ mile in the other direction.
It is set between the market town of Chard, with its shops and museums, and the larger county town of Taunton with its bustling shopping centre, restaurants, bars and entertainment facilities. There are many tourist attractions to visit, from woodland walks to National Trust estates such as Barrington Court and Montacute House. The Quantocks and Exmoor National Park are within easy driving, and for a trip back in time, travel from Taunton along the West Somerset Steam Railway to Minehead.
Further afield you have the Jurassic Coast beaches of Lyme Regis and West Bay, as well as some of Somerset’s great places to visit. Guests can drive to Glastonbury Tor for an exhilarating walk to the top with some magnificent views of Somerset, perhaps calling in at The Clarkes Factory Village and Wells Cathedral and Palace, or head into the other direction into Devon and visit the city of Exeter and have lunch on the quays! On the south Somerset and Devon border, yet within easy driving distance of the famous World Heritage Jurassic Coast, these two detached holiday homes have wonderful views over the countryside, and are in a great location for exploring this popular area. Stepen Cottage (ref UKC3835) is a two-storey cottage built in mellow hamstone, and Stepen View (ref UKC3835) is a small chalet sleeping two, but both are ideal for taking in the area and can be booked independently or together.
There are many wonderful attractions to visit within easy driving distance, and you may like to spend family time at Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its Concorde and Aircraft Carrier Experience, or admire a fascinating array of classic cars that await at the Haynes Motor Museum. Historical places of interest include Forde Abbey and Gardens, Montacute House and Tintinhull House. For keen shoppers, there is Clarks Village, the factory retail outlet at Street.
To the south is the beautiful Jurassic Coast to take in, calling in at the ‘Jewel of the Crown’ of Dorset, Lyme Regis, with its great harbour, The Cobb, and beach. Visit Seaton, with its wonderful tram railway, the donkey sanctuary at Sidmouth and wander around the beautiful area of Beer and Branscombe. Slightly further on, children can enjoy a day at Crealey Adventure Park, or maybe a day visiting Exeter with with its shops, cathedral and catacombs would make a good day out for all the family. Welcome to Whitney Cottage, a fabulous holiday home set in the wonderful Somerset village of Horton. Enter through the gate into your garden, which wraps around the house providing multiple seating areas, your own summerhouse with seating as well as your private hot tub, tucked neatly away giving you the utmost privacy while allowing you to enjoy your surroundings. Step inside where everything is on the ground floor, catering to all ages and abilities. The warm and bright living room has lovely comfortable sofas and a gas fire, perfect for those cooler evenings, however in the summer throw open the French doors and let the warm breeze flow in. The kitchen is open-plan with the dining area, with the former being extremely well equipped, while the bright and welcoming dining area is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal at any time of the day! Off the hallway, you will find the bedrooms, both finished to a high standard with cream and oak furniture, as well as a TV in each. The large shower room has a fantastic walk-in shower with both a large rainfall shower head and a handheld head for ease. Underfloor heating features throughout, making Whitney Cottage the perfect choice for your next break at any time of the year! A dog is welcome to come and stay ,but please be aware dogs must not be left unattended at any time in the cottage.
Just a 10-minute walk away you have the local bar and restaurant, which serves a range of local food and drink, or hop in the car to another pub, just a 5-minute drive, which serves gorgeous wood-fired pizzas and an amazing Sunday lunch. A 7-minute drive is another pub which serves a wonderful mix of traditional English and Caribbean foods. You will be spoilt for choice with things to do while staying at Whitney Cottage, with miles of walks from your doorstep exploring Somerset’s countryside. Venture further afield to one of the many National Trust properties nearby such as Montacute House and Barrington Court. The Jurassic Coast and Lyme Regis can be reached in around 30 minutes’, walk along the promenade, grab an ice cream and sunbathe, or head to Charmouth for some fossil hunting in the famous Jurassic Cliffs!
