Coppice Hill House offers a comfortable and homely base for couples and families wishing to explore this popular part of Hampshire. Parts of this characterful Grade II listed property dates back to the 15th century, with some later additions, mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is steeped in history, and was formerly a pub, a school, a place for the manufacture of bespoke bricks and tiles, and also a doctors surgery. This traditional, detached family home enjoys some charming features such as beams, tiled floors, inglenook fireplaces, original oak floors, wood panelling in the dining room, a Rayburn, walled garden and a wood burner. The naval city of Portsmouth is 14 miles away, with its historic dockyard, home to Nelson’s Victory and The Mary Rose, along with waterside dining, extensive designer shops and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight. Winchester, Southampton with its shopping centre and the New Forest with extensive heathland walks, riding and cycling opportunities are approximately 40 minutes away. Historic Chichester with its cathedral and festival theatre, the city of Winchester, beaches at West Witterings or Hayling Island, the Watercress steam train, Jane Austens’ House, Gilbert White’s house and Birdworld, Marwell Zoo and Peppa Pig World are all easily reached. Slightly further is Chichester with Festival Theatre, boat tours, extensive shopping, Goodwood (Glorious Goodwood, Festival of Speed and Revival for motor racing) and Fontwell for a day at the races. Other race courses within easy reach include Brighton and Lingfield. Beaches within a 30 minute-drive include West Wittering, Worthing and the ever popular cosmopolitan city of Brighton, with its pier, Regency Royal Pavilion, theatres and art galleries.

There are many stately homes and gardens to discover too, some of which are National Trust, including Petworth House, Goodwood House and Gardens, Nymans, Glyndebourne, Sheffield Park and Borde Hill. Also within easy driving distance is Cowdray for polo. For bird lovers and wildlife, visit nearby RSPB Pulborough. There are various golf clubs all within easy reach, and horse riding too. The wonderful National Trust property Uppark House and Gardens can be seen from the house and is a 5-minute drive from Compton. The picturesque town of Petersfield is just 9 miles away; this ancient market town was originally built as a Norman ’new town’ at the end of the 11th century. The main square provides an attractive focal point providing the perfect venue for the traditional market every Saturday and Wednesday.

Chichester, Chichester Harbour and Goodwood are all around 10 miles away. The city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient but fantastically preserved Roman city walls with broad streets that are packed with listed buildings. It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining 2000 years of heritage, with a lively lifestyle headed by the towering presence of the cathedral. For some classically British pastimes, the famous Goodwood Estate offers a range of activities including a championship golf course, the motor circuit, racecourse and aerodrome.

For days out for a beach trip, look no further than West Wittering’s famous sands (it gets very busy in summer!). A little further afield, and Portsmouth is famous as the home of HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and also the Mary Rose. The historic dockyard sits right next to Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower, which offer spectacular views over Portsmouth and the Solent. Beach 13½ miles.
