The historic cathedral city of Winchester, 30 minutes away, boasting many historic attractions such as Winchester Cathedral, King Arthur’s Round Table and Jane Austen’s House. Located within the South Downs National Park, in the pretty village of Singleton, The Old Surgery is a self-contained, two bedroom holiday cottage able to facilitate up to four guests. The property forms a small part of Corner Cottage, one of Singleton’s most iconic and historic houses. Dating back to 1731, the whole property has undergone a full restoration. This beautiful listed building has been entirely re-built by local craftsmen and retains many of its original features while encasing state-of-the-art contemporary living.

The wing of the main house was once known by the community as the village surgery. As a nod to its history, it is now called The Old Surgery and has its own separate entrance and French windows that flow onto a bespoke patio, surrounded by the larger walled garden that surrounds the entire house. The owners live in the main house alongside running part of the property as a B&B. The Old Surgery also features a few fun furnishings relating to its medical past. You will find decorative old medicine bottles beautifully displayed behind glass casings in the ground floor bedroom walls, and a vintage medical wall mount which doctors used to put their X-rays on, doubling up as a quirky wall light in the hallway.

The cottage living room has a large wall mounted Smart TV in front of the Swedish style sofa, so that you can snuggle down in front of the wood burner and relax at the end of a long day out exploring West Sussex. The kitchen is open plan with the living room and dining area, and is equipped with everything you will need to self-cater during your stay, when you’re not dining out at one of the local pubs. The cottage has two bedrooms, a ground floor twin bedroom, with zip and link beds so you can have a super kingsize if you prefer, whilst a spacious bedroom occupies the first floor with a double bed at one end and a single day bed at the other for flexible sleeping arrangements. The beautiful bathroom on the ground floor with its highly individual decorative tiles has a small, yet very deep bath which is a sit-down Japanese design. There is also a separate state of the art power shower.

There is a superb choice of activities and places to visit in West Sussex. The village of Singleton is only a short distance from the historic cathedral city of Chichester, and a few minutes’ away from the Goodwood Estate famed for its motor racing, golfing and horse racing. The renowned Cowdray House and Polo Club are also nearby, as well as Petworth House, Arundel Castle, Fishbourne Roman Palace, and Weald and Downland Museums are also nearby. You can spend the day immersing yourself in the best of the counties cultural offerings. Beach 12½ miles. Shop 1½ miles, pub and restaurant 175 yards.

Owl Cottage is a delightful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life with its location in the centre of one of the most picturesque villages in Sussex and surrounded by the South Downs National Park. The cottage is all one level and the entrance is easily accessed by a sloping pathway.

On entering the cottage through the porch you arrive into the beautifully decorated living area with a pitched ceiling giving it a light and spacious feel. With a comfortable settee and armchairs surrounding the wood burner there is a warm and welcoming feel immediately. The kitchen fitted with modern amenities including a useful washing machine with drying facility, great for those muddy days on the Downs and French doors open to the garden with table and chairs to enjoy in the summer months. The spacious bedroom has ample wardrobe space and a kingsize bed. A shower room completes the picture.

The garden area to the front of Owl Cottage has a lovely bench and a sweet garden pond which the local birdlife love. Within minutes of Owl Cottage you will find a bustling tea room local shop and a choice of three local hostelries within short walking distance.

Amberley is at the foot of the South Downs and is noted for its many thatched cottages. It is a village that has managed to retain its character and appeal over the centuries and it will delight all visitors. The River Arun with its tidal plain cuts through the South Downs at Amberley. The South Downs Way crosses the river beside the village where a walk either east or west will soon present you with stunning Downland views and total seclusion. The tidal river plain north of the village forms the Amberley Wildbrooks, a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its wildfowl and maintained by Sussex Wildlife Trust. The RSPB reserve at Pulborough Brooks neighbours Amberley and is a wetland haven for bird life and an overwintering ground for many migrant species. It has many opportunities for studying the wild life from several strategically located hides.

Only a mile away is the Amberley Working Museum which was used as a set location for the James Bond Film ’A View to a Kill’. It is a 36-acre open air museum set into a chalk quarry and is dedicated to the industrial heritage of South East England. There are many themed events throughout the year so it is worth taking a look to see what’s on. Two miles to the east, Parham House and Gardens is an imposing Elizabethan house facing the Downs. The rooms are graced with fresh flowers cut daily from the four acre walled garden. The main rooms are the Great Hall, Great Chamber and the Long Gallery which at the top of the house does leave a tremendous visual impression. Five miles downstream from Amberley, south of the Downs, you come to Arundel, a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. If you fancy making your visit a little different why not catch the train one stop down the line and come back on the river. The town offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tea rooms. A trip to Arundel would never be complete without visiting the castle. The seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens Arundel Castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and to climb the 131 steps to the Keep to take in the views is worth the effort.

To the left of the hall is an attractive beamed sitting room where deep, comfortable sofas, low level lighting, large Smart TV and an open fireplace create a relaxed, welcoming ambience. Across the hall, the long living room has a sofa and leads to the spacious kitchen at the far end of the house. With a huge island breakfast bar, triple electric Aga, an upholstered pew bench and doors to the garden, it is a fabulous space to find inspiration for a dinner party. A convenient utility room lies to the side, and set off the sitting room at the centre of the house, the orangery has a long dining table and corner sofas facing out into the garden through French doors. A lovely spot for canapés, with the evening sun casting its dappled light through the trees.
Upstairs on the first floor are four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study. The vast triple-aspect master features a striking four-poster, kingsize bed and garden views, and the second bedroom has a double bed with dressing area. Bedrooms three and four have zip and link beds that can be set up as doubles on request. On the second floor is a hidden delight tucked out of the way from the main social areas: a TV/games den complete with bean bags. The perfect hideaway for the kids to enjoy their own private holiday space.
Outside, to the front of the house is a car port with table tennis, and a lawn with bistro table. To the rear, a huge patio with dining and lounge furniture leads out to extensive, securely enclosed gardens fringed with mature trees and shrubs. Located roughly 5 miles north of Worthing and set within the green and pleasant hills of the South Downs National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, “Manor Cottage” lies in the quaint west Sussex village of Findon.
The village has a popular range of shops, public houses and restaurants to visit and is also convenient for easy access to endless walking and riding via footpaths, bridlepaths and the South Downs Way. Findon is by-passed by the A24 and provides good access to London. You can spot the horses in action on the gallops. Walk part of the 100-mile South Downs Way with historic woodlands where you can smell the intoxicating scent of the bluebells in the spring. Look out for barn owls, kestrels, roe deer and red kites, and you may even be lucky enough to see hares boxing.
