This very unique village was created some 750 years ago by Henry III when he granted Lavenham ’market’ status, and today, regular farmers markets are held. Bury St Edmunds is 11 miles away and Colchester is 18 miles, which boasts many shops, bars and restaurants. Ipswich, with its harbour and marina, is 19 miles and offers a great day out with walking access into the town with its shops. For a more coastal scene, take a drive to the Suffolk coastline with its beautiful beaches and RSPB reserves. Explore the area on foot via the network of footpaths. From the rear of the pub take the footpath alongside the estuary that follows the old railway line, through a nature reserve, to the beach at Warblerswick. Or head inland from the recreated Blythburgh station to Wenhaston and beyond.

Walkers will be spoilt for choice here - you can stroll from Beccles to Geldeston Locks, a 7-mile walk along Angles Way, passing Barsham Hall, where the ghost of old Blunderhazard is said to ride his fire-breathing horses to Norwich and back on Christmas Eve! Or the footpath from Beccles to Geldeston village makes for a wonderful riverside walk.
Just 4 miles away is the pretty town of Beccles, made up of small market squares and winding streets, nestled by the River Waveney. You’ll find quirky independent shops, restaurants and cafés, along with festivals and entertainment held throughout the year. Visit nearby Lowestoft for sandy beaches and seaside amusements, or head to Southwold for a traditional seaside resort, just a 20-minute drive away. Tollgate Cottage is a beautiful, detached single level property enviably located on the edge of the Blythburgh Estuary. It is tucked away alongside the A12 which runs the length of the Suffolk Heritage Coast making it the ideal spot for those wishing to explore this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the village you will find a popular pub and walks including those by the famous church. The legend of the Black Shuck, a ghostly black dog, dates back to 1577 and has been immortalised in songs and folk legend. The church itself is an incredible structure, overlooking the Blyth Valley.

Public transport is superb here and you can get into the ever popular Southwold to enjoy all the quintessential town has to offer with ease. From its independent shops, brightly coloured beach huts and traditional pier, it’s easy to see why this coastal town is a holiday hot spot all year round. Walberswick is also an excellent must see during your visit. Crabbing here is the sport of choice and it will keep kids entertained all day. All you need is a line, a bucket and bacon (we hear smoked bacon is the preferred kind!).

This is also a dog friendly area with endless woodland and beach walks. A trip to Dunwich and the woods are highly recommended. With a much needed pub at the end of the route this is a destination ideal for both summer and winter getaways. The train station is in neighbouring Campsea Ashe with rail links to London, the coast and the Broads.
