Whitby being only 9 miles away is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The 3 miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to local shops, post office and cafés. In the nearby village of Rosedale Abbey, 1½ miles away, you have a couple of pubs as well as a couple of cafés and a village shop. There is also a small pitch and putt golf course with a second larger golf course around a 15-minute drive away. Rosedale Abbey is very scenic and attracts many walkers. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en route for some local ales and traditional food. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line.
The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, with cycle hire and other adventure activities including zip wiring through the treetops. During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room open in the summer, as well as orchards and a cider mill. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its home-made chocolate shop.
