On the doorstep are award-winning eateries, gastro pubs and numerous interesting shops and boutiques. Helmsley boasts an Art Centre with live events and film programmes, 5 acres of beautiful walled gardens set beside the backdrop of the castle ruins and Duncombe Park, a country estate and home to the International Centre of Birds of Prey. During the summer months there is an open-air swimming pool.
The surrounding areas offer wonderful walking and cycling. The Cleveland Way starts out from Helmsley and the first part of this leads to the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Nestled close to the North Yorkshire Moors, Helmsley is well placed to enjoy all that Yorkshire has to offer including the famous steam train which departs from Pickering, 13 miles away, and transports visitors through stunning scenery to the ancient fishing port of Whitby. Flamingo Land and ‘Go Ape’ in Dalby Forest appeal to all ages and the spectacular coastline is within an hour’s drive. Days out can be enjoyed at the great houses of Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall. The vibrant, medieval city of York, 24 miles, is steeped in history and brimming with attractions, including the iconic Minster and the National Railway Museum. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.

Cherry Garth Cottages are located in the centre of Thornton le Dale, ’Yorkshire’s little gem’. Cherry Laurel has been named after the cherry trees which border the garden. The cottage has been built from beautiful traditional Yorkshire stone, and is tucked away in the grounds of the owner’s home Cherry Garth. It has an open plan living area with a welcoming wood burner to snuggle up in front of after a busy day out exploring the spectacular Yorkshire coast and countryside, and upon arrival you will find a lovely welcome pack with tea and coffee. There are lovely views from the property onto the garden and the beck which runs alongside the cottage.

The picturesque village of Thornton le Dale is located on the edge of the North York Moors, a mere one mile from Pickering. From here you can take a ride on the famous steam train to Grosmont, Goathland (aka Aidensfield in the classic TV series Heartbeat) and the seaside town of Whitby where you can climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Those looking for a quieter pace of life may prefer to walk the many footpaths and bridleways over the North York Moors.

Dating back to 1890, this semi-detached holiday cottage is situated down a quiet lane in one of the prettiest villages in North Yorkshire. A short stroll from the centre, it is ideal for exploring the Moors and the Heritage coastline, as well as the city of York. Nearby are Kirkby Moorside, Helmsley, and Pickering where you can board a steam train and take a journey through countryside. Visit Dalby Forest for cycling, with tracks to suit all ages. Scarborough, 20 miles, has beaches. Whitby is 18 miles. The cottage is in the most perfect location as there is so much within walking distance. Within a 5-minute walk and within the beautiful village there is a variety of local shops, tea rooms, ice cream and cake shops, pubs serving food, as well as a fish and chips and pizza takeaway. In addition there are beautiful walks to be taken from the door, an attractive duck pond and the stream down the road from the cottage, and for younger guests a play park within a few minutes’ walk.

The Heritage Coast of Yorkshire and Whitby are easily accessed, and you can take a leisurely journey through the Esk Valley. Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington can be found a little further afield. A must when visiting this area are the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay. The property benefits from a private parking space at your door, so need to worry about parking on your arrival or return from a day’s adventure! The master bedroom is spacious with kingsize bed and an en-suite shower room, and the second bedroom benefits from being next to the family bathroom. The open plan living space is spacious and comfortable with a coal-effect fire offering a cosy glow, perfect for relaxing in front of the Smart TV after a day out in one of the many attractions in and around Whitby.

The coast is just a short walk from your doorstep where you can enjoy over 1½ miles of golden sands, including a designated dog walking area. You can also enjoy donkey rides or just take a stroll with an ice cream whilst enjoying fantastic views out to sea and across to the abbey, made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head into the town centre where you will find plenty of quaint shops selling all sorts of curiosities from Whitby Jet jewellery to Gothic clothing. Whitby has a hugely popular food and drink scene with many bistros and café bars, as well as traditional fish and chip shops and tea rooms. Venture just a little further out of town for a game of golf or explore some of the hidden gems to be found all along the coast. Take a visit to Robin Hoods Bay, which can be accessed along the Cinder track and Cleveland Way, or any number of bays and coves along this magnificent coastline including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn. For a complete contrast, you can head inland and take in the breathtaking scenery of the North York Moors National Park. For a different kind of day you can take a steam train from Whitby into Goathland, also known as Aidensfield in the popular Heartbeat TV series. With so much to see and do on your doorstep you may need more than one visit. This terraced cottage is named after the bird formations which you can see from the windows looking out towards the Abbey. Situated at the foot of the North York Moors National Park, Weaver’s Cottage, restored in 2019, retains lots of character and original features. This pretty row of terraced cottages was home to some of the weavers that worked in the mills that were dotted in Pickering and the surrounding villages. The cottage has the added bonus of private parking for two cars as well as a rear courtyard area.

Pickering is a bustling market town with lots of restaurants, wine bars and local pubs. There’s a market every Monday held down the high street where locals and tourists enjoy the bargains. Situated just a 5-minute walk from the North York Moors steam railway, and for those train enthusiasts amongst you, this makes for a dream holiday. You can catch the steam train from Pickering and travel over the North York Moors National Park to Whitby. Stop off at the village of Goathland, home to the fictional village of Aidensfield in the popular TV programme ’Heartbeat’.

Whitby is a bustling seaside town with its majestic abbey standing proud on the headland reached by 199 steps from the cobbled streets lined with independent shops and cafés. Scarborough and Filey lie to the east of Pickering, both fantastic seaside resorts with award winning beaches. The Dalby Forest is a short drive or bike ride from the cottage and is home to one of the World Cup Mountain Bike Trials, and there are challenging runs as well as the easy routes for beginners. The Dalby Forest is also home to ’Go Ape’, a great high rope adventure course through the forest. Just a 10-minute drive away is Flamingo Land Theme Park with exhilarating rides and a fantastic zoo making for a great family day out. Beach 19 miles.
