The cottage is situated a 10 minute walk (under 1 mile) from the quaint market town of Thirsk, with its 15th-century church, original cinema and renowned racecourse. The cobbled market square hosts a twice weekly market and is surrounded by individual shops, traditional inns and tea rooms. The pub that James Herriott used to drink in with his father is situated less than 5 minutes walk away. Alf Wight, the well-known vet and author of ’All Creatures Great and Small’ lived here and the ’World of James Herriott’ visitor centre gives a fascinating insight into the working life of this famous vet, his subsequent books and TV series. The village of Sowerby provides a perfect base from which to explore the wider area too, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North Yorkshire Moors to the east. Places of interest include Sutton Bank and Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey and Aysgarth Falls. Families enjoy hours of fun at Lightwater Valley, the Forbidden Corner in Coverdale and Flamingo Land. The coastal resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are all easily accessible and regular trains and buses run to the ancient walled city of York which is 25 miles.
