Hotel OK not Luxury Spa dreadful
Entire spa area and changing rooms tiled in smooth tiles resulting in a very dangerous slippery floor. Spa bath not working at all. Steam room only worked for a few minutes until door was opened to reset the steam generator. I fell over, reported to reception who said they d tell someone. Didn t hear anything more.. no follow up. Restaurant offerings were average with poor quality bread and plastic wrapped biscuits on the table .. more like a cafe. Food was well cooked but service was slow and we witnessed several meals being sent back. Room was basic as was the hospitality tray. An impressive building in a great location. Could be fantastic.. but it wasn t!

Pleasant stay let down by Reception
We found the position and the people in Reception very unwelcoming. It seemed to be tucked away in a corner so not what you would expect at a 4 star hotel. On arrival for afternoon tea on our 1st day we gave Reception details for our bank card and car number and was told room wouldn't be ready until 3.30pm when we would then get our room keys. On returning at 3.30pm we discovered a huge queue as everyone obviously told the same thing which was just ridiculous. After a long wait I was then told by a far from friendly Receptionist that our room key had already been handed out. Honestly it took forever to get sorted out and I returned about 3 times. Both ladies at Reception appeared loud and rude so finally a pleasant woman in Management got it sorted. I was all for just going home. On leaving the hotel we were given the wrong bill so that didn't help our view of the two ladies that meet and greet. The lous lady misheard the room number I gave so it was far higher than expected. I queried a breakdown but she rudely said we don't do that. I had a closer room and saw she had made the mistake with the room but I got no apology. I think more training is required for your Receptionists as these two are probably the rudest I have ever encountered.

Beautiful but bit disappointing
Our luxury weekend started with a warm bottle of prosecco in a pool of luke warm water. Hardly the iced romantic welcome promised. At the bar and 8.50 a pint the festive spirit was destroyed, no excuse for those prices. The place though is beautiful and food is good. Wouldn't go back though with that pricing strategy.

How to get here
By Train
Pitlochry Station is on the main rail line between London, Edinburgh and Inverness. Regular trains, and one overnight sleeper train, run through Pitlochry from London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Direct trains between London Kings Cross and Pitlochry run twice daily making London just over 6 hours away.
The station at Pitlochry has a bridge that can be difficult to negotiate for visitors with disabilities. Scotrail will make sure that you have all the assistance you require if you contact them in advance. It takes around 15-20 minutes to walk to Atholl Palace Hotel from the train station. Please bear in mind it is an uphill walk.
By Car
Approaching Pitlochry from the South, take the A924 (signposted for Pitlochry) off the A9. After passing the Blair Athol distillery on your right, continue under a railway bridge and turn right into the Atholl Palace entrance. From the north , take the A924 (signposted for Pitlochry) off the A9. The A924 is the main street through Pitlochry. Continue right through the town and turn sharp left just before the railway bridge.
Getting to Scotland By Air
The closest major airport is Edinburgh, at just over 1 hour away by car. Dundee also has a small airport, which is approximately 45 minutes drive away. Glasgow international is 90 minutes away and Prestwick 2 hours.
