First time at The Palace
The ratings provided were as accurate as I could make. The room itself got only a good due to its size. The shower, toilet and sink room was extremely tight to manoeuvre in if you re of a certain size. The heating in there was unbelievably hot. The heated towel rail could be very dangerous if a child or elderly person was to stumble in the tight confines of the toilet room. It was constantly burning hot. The sleeping room measured only about 13 x 12 approximately which for the price paid was a bit too small in my opinion. The hotel was fairly clean though the floor in the bar could do with a daily sweep as food was seen on the floor under the tables from the day before. The best was the staff who worked very very hard for very long hours, nothing was too much to ask. I can t honestly answer the question below re-staying here again so I have deliberately left it unanswered.
Pleased in most respects
We thought it met our needs and were comfortable during our stayThe suit of rooms left little to complain about in terms of location and facilities but lacked a great view The wall in shower lacked a hand rail
We would have welcomed a tour on arrival with a personal reassurance about fire regulations
The booking went smoothly but we were surprising to have to pay the full amount in advance
Scotland in lockdown
The Athol Palace suited us well. Ideally situated in Pitlochry for gentle touring up the two adjacent glens enabled us to see a part of Scotland new to us.
The hotel was large enough to enable social distancing to be effective without being overpowering. The grounds are extensive allowing for both gentle walks and keep fit running. The town of Pitlochry is within easy walking distance. With the breakfasts and dinners one certainly needed to exercise!

How to get here
By Train
Pitlochry Station is on the main rail line between London, Edinburgh and Inverness. Regular trains, and one overnight sleeper train, run through Pitlochry from London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Direct trains between London Kings Cross and Pitlochry run twice daily making London just over 6 hours away.
The station at Pitlochry has a bridge that can be difficult to negotiate for visitors with disabilities. Scotrail will make sure that you have all the assistance you require if you contact them in advance. It takes around 15-20 minutes to walk to Atholl Palace Hotel from the train station. Please bear in mind it is an uphill walk.
By Car
Approaching Pitlochry from the South, take the A924 (signposted for Pitlochry) off the A9. After passing the Blair Athol distillery on your right, continue under a railway bridge and turn right into the Atholl Palace entrance. From the north , take the A924 (signposted for Pitlochry) off the A9. The A924 is the main street through Pitlochry. Continue right through the town and turn sharp left just before the railway bridge.
Getting to Scotland By Air
The closest major airport is Edinburgh, at just over 1 hour away by car. Dundee also has a small airport, which is approximately 45 minutes drive away. Glasgow international is 90 minutes away and Prestwick 2 hours.
