What Key insights have you learned from DNA testing Hugo and Huxley with Wisdom Panel?

We were suspicious of whether Hugo was 100% Golden Retriever…Wisdom Panel helped us to confirm he is – and so is Huxley (which we were less surprised about!) But the testing goes far beyond breed, it also includes insights on their health, behaviours, traits and relatives! For example, we found out they’re both predisposed to loving snacks and napping in inconvenient spots (kidding, but maybe that’s hereditary too?) But seriously, being able to screen for 260+ health conditions, as well as being provided with information on the breed’s ideal nutrition, grooming, exercise, and training, has helped us tailor their care, and it’s given us peace of mind knowing what to look out for as they get older. 

How has DNA testing the boys helped you deepen your connection with them?

It’s like getting to know them on a whole new level! Not only did we learn about their health predispositions, but it also gave us a better understanding of why they behave the way they do. For example, Huxley has a higher propensity for separation anxiety as well as weight gain but generalised fear and anxiety is low. Knowing these quirks are part of his genetic makeup has made us more aware of these tendencies. It’s helped us be more proactive with both their health too, which means we can keep them happy and active for as long as possible.

Would you recommend other owners to do a DNA test for their dogs?

Absolutely! It’s not just about knowing what breed they are (though it’s fun to confirm that your Golden Retriever is, in fact, all Golden). The health insights are invaluable, and it’s a great way to make sure you’re giving your dog the best care possible. You can also see your dog’s family tree, and with Wisdom Panel’s database of over 4 million dogs, there’s a very high chance you’ll find one of your dog’s relatives using the test—which was amazing to see. Plus, it’s just fascinating to see what makes your dog unique with their new behaviours feature. For example, knowing that Huxley doesn’t get motion sickness means we can confidently take him on car rides or adventures without worrying about discomfort, allowing us to make the most of our outings together.

In what way do they behave similarly?

Both boys have mastered the art of the “puppy eyes,” especially when treats are involved. They also have a shared love for belly rubs and chasing squirrels, though they’ve yet to actually catch one (thankfully). And let’s just say, they both think they’re lap dogs—even though their combined weight says otherwise. Wisdom Panel’s behaviours feature showed that they are actually genetically similar in their behaviour of being friendly towards unfamiliar people. This means I can confidently introduce them to new friends, knowing they’ll likely be welcoming and sociable.

 In what way do they behave differently?

Huxley is the more adventurous one, always eager to explore, while Hugo tends to be more cautious and prefers a relaxed pace. Interestingly, Wisdom Panel’s results showed that Huxley doesn’t avoid getting wet, which aligns with his love for water play. In contrast, while Hugo enjoys water, he’s a bit more hesitant, especially when it comes to bath time. This highlights their genetic differences in behaviour, making each of their personalities uniquely charming.

How do you accommodate travel with them to suit their behaviours and needs?

Both boys love coming away with me. It’s always important to make sure they’ve had exercise before getting in the car to get to our destination. I always make sure the place we’re staying as a decent size dog bed and I pack the food they have at home so it’s something familiar and they don’t get upset stomachs.

Are there any funny incidents since having Hugo and Huxley?

Where do I begin? There was that time Hugo discovered his reflection in the window and barked at “the other dog” for a solid 20 minutes. Hux on the other hand, has a tendency to “help” with gardening, which usually means digging up my plants while giving me the most innocent “I’m just helping!” face. Also, let’s not forget the time they teamed up to steal a sandwich from the counter—Huxley was the lookout, while Hugo did the dirty work.

What’s a typical day for you and the boys?

We start the day with a classic morning cuddle (or dogpile, depending on their mood). Breakfast comes next, which Hugo devours at record speed while Huxley enjoys his at a more civilised pace. We’ll go for a walk, where they take turns deciding which tree to sniff, and then they spend the afternoon napping or lounging in the garden. By evening, it’s zoomies-o’clock, and the living room turns into their personal race track. We end the day with another round of cuddles, and they finally allow me to have my bed back—sort of.

What has been your most memorable holiday with Hugo & Huxley?

Our most memorable trip was when we took them to a dog-friendly beach.. We had a three hour walk and when I got back to the car I realised my keys were lost and the tide was coming in so I went back out to look for the keys much to the boys like he thought we were having an extra walk…another two hours later and they weren’t found. The boys were absolutely covered in sand and he had to beg a local taxi driver to take us back to our hotel with me promising the boys wouldn’t leave a trace of hair or sand behind.

 What’s next on the horizon for you?

I have always wanted to take the boys abroad for a proper long hike in fact it’s been something I wanted you ever since I first got Hugo almost over 10 years ago now, although he is much older, I’d like to fulfil this dream and take it at his place… so if you have any suggestions for a trip abroad and a nice place to stay, let us know!
