Puppy’s First Holiday: Top Tips and Inspiration
The puppy stage is the best time to ensure your dog is comfortable with travelling. This is because it’s easier to train a puppy and get them used to new things like cars, trains, and other transportation. Having said that, we recommend waiting until they are at least 6 months old. By then, your new puppy should have had all their vaccinations.

Top Tips for your Puppy’s First Holiday
Before you set off on your holiday with your new puppy it’s important you’re prepared for anything. After all, you want to ensure your puppy’s first holiday goes smoothly! Here are some of our PetsPyjamas Top Tips for puppy-friendly getaways:
- Take your puppy on short day trips in the car: Get your pup used to travelling before your holiday. Each time you go out, you can increase the distance a little. This is a good way to see whether your pup can manage car journeys without getting sick. Make sure to offer them plenty of reassurance and breaks along the way.
- Book somewhere not too far away: When choosing your dog-friendly destination, it’s best to make sure it’s not too far away. We recommend no more than 2 hours, and ideally a place where you can dine with your puppy.
- Enclosed Gardens: Dog-friendly properties with enclosed gardens are the way to go. Puppies will need plenty of easy outdoor access where they can do their business!
- Take your puppy’s crate: One of the safest ways for dogs to travel in the car is in a travel crate. You can also use them as a bed if you don’t want your puppy to run around wild. A dog seatbelt attached to your pup’s harness will help to keep your puppy safe during your travels too!
- Bring puppy-friendly chews: Teething puppies will chew at anything. Not ideal when you’re staying in a hotel or cottage. Therefore, bring lots of dental chews, treats, and other puppy chew toys to deter them from nibbling on the furnishings!
- Pack all your puppy items: You’ll be needing collapsible water and food bowls, poop bags, baby wipes, blankets, bed, and maybe even a pet first aid kit to be safe!
