Nice location, poor value for money

Anon, stayed: June 2024

The hotel is in a lovely location on the lakeside and is surrounded by beautiful well-kept gardens.
The location is definitely the main seller of the hotel.

Unfortunately, we felt the value for money was very poor. We ate a 2 course dinner in the restaurant ( quite a small menu choose from too) but we wanted to give it a try. The portion sizes were extremely small, so much so that we both left hungry after 2 courses. We got a bottle of still water and the bill was 92. Very steep considering we had no alcohol.
Breakfast the next morning was very much the same it looked very sparse what you got on the plate, 1 sausage, 1 small egg, 1 mushroom,1 tomato. I understand to look at it looks gourmet , but in reality it s just poor value for a 20 breakfast.
A 10% service charge is added to everything you order in the hotel, which is absolutely fine if the customer service reflects that, but it definitely didn t.
The attitude of a few of the staff was as though they didn t want to be there. There were multiple occasions throughout the hotel where I d let staff come through the door first and held the door open and didn t even get a thank you. So to charge a 10% service charge when that is the service you get is pretty disappointing.
In addition to this, we ordered NO room service throughout our stay however, the hotel decided to add on a 5 room charge on check-out regardless if you used any room services or not.
I had already paid for the room, I had already paid an extra 10 surcharge for going in June, yet they still thought necessary to add another 5 on.
We actually decided to not buy anything else at the hotel as the prices were extortionate.
Yet somehow still came out with a bill of 20 on check-out due to extra service charges. One thing I would suggest is to always check your receipt if you re going here, I saw a lot of reviews saying the same thing.

Rooms are a bit dated however, I understand they are currently under refurbishment so this is already in the process. TVs in the room need updating with smart features or the option to watch your own Netflix etc.

Gardens outside are beautiful & the games room is a nice touch.

Unfortunately we wouldn t return here.

Lovely base for a walking holiday - not for a spa break!

JW, Sevenoaks, stayed: May 2026

The hotel was lovely, staff helpful and welcoming, the food in the bar restaurant great, all of the other lovely guests (and their dogs!!) :) - the Spa? AWFUL! Worst massage I have ever had in my life.
I was in for a Swedish massage - asked how I would like to feel during/after my treatment..... Relaxed/ready for a sleep' was my reply...... I also specified on the form pre-treatment, and whilst in the room asked her to AVOID my shoulders.

The outcome..? I wasn't asked what scent of oil I would prefer (I hate lavender) My shoulders were worked on constantly - with such vigour I actually felt my skin was tender - my lower back was merely given a light brush over as an afterthought. I was leant over to get to the top of my other arm and the arm on her side was given the once over. Then I was told to turn. I had to ask for an eye mask/bag to stop the light affecting me. My legs - well they seemingly stop just above my knee (front and back) and my arms? I only have front forearms!

I was on edge, I was upset, I was NOT relaxed, I felt like an oil slick, I was so un-relaxed it was unreal!!!
I was told it was over and asked to leave.
I had to ask for a drink of water, and a robe (again - I had asked this on my arrival - pre-massage(we were guests of the hotel for the weekend))
I was eventually given one - "this will do - it has no belt though"

I also asked is there a relaxation room? Yes; that's where my friend was, who had just had the most wonderfully relaxing facial - she was more relaxed and "zen" than I was and had only had a facial?!!??!?! Seriously!? Fuming.
Asked if there was a complaint form - was told 'you could send in an email if you were not happy'!?!?!?
PLEASE give me an email to send this to? or simply show your spa this review!

Yes I would stay again - but I'd most definitely go elsewhere for a massage!!

Location & Local Attractions

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, surrounded by breath taking scenery, scenic walks to suit all abilities, and a breadth of wonderful visitor attractions right on the doorstep.

A lake cruise is a must, and you can get to many of the neighbouring towns by boat too.

The famous village of Cartmel is just 10 miles away from Lakeside and  is home to a wide variety of traditional Lakeland inns, tea rooms and cutting edge gourmet restaurants, including the internationally acclaimed Michelin Star restaurant, L'Enclume. There's also the 12th Century Priory, and a racecourse.

No visit to the Lakes would be complete without learning more about Beatrix Potter, and The World of Beatrix Potter is located in Bowness itself.

There are a number of walks that can be enjoyed from the hotel, from a leisurely stroll around the lake or Great Knott Wood, to a more ambitious hike. The hotel are happy to recommend routes nearby.
