Good but......
We stayed here for a few nights. Our room was spacious and clean, we were not in the main hotel but across the courtyard, was not expecting this, but were lucky with the weather, so did not get wet walking outside to dinner. We did get some noise from below, which I think was used by the hotel for storage, staff could be heard early morning. Grounds were lovely, staff generally helpful. Charlie was great, seemed very efficient but sadly left the hotel during our stay. Unfortunately the restaurant service was not so good after he left. The main disappointment was the minimal choice on the menu, basically 3 starters, main courses and desserts, which were not changed much. Often keeping the main ingredients, with minimal change. Would not have wanted to stay any longer because of this. 2 meals were very good, 2 were not great. I understand the chef changed whilst we were there as well, but had a good meal from this chef before leaving.
Marvellous staff. Shame about the food
Lovely atmospheric building and lovely grounds
Room was ok but away from the main house
Unfortunately poor weather did not help
The food was inconsistent and not always the good quality people would expect
Examples: first night , the chicken parfait starter was inedible and was commented on by many
guests in the room. I chose wisely that night , my meal was very good
Second night menu was tweaked but very over salted
My wife and I were disappointed
Third night was ok but not what was expected from a gourmet venue
In all the food had limited choice which is blamed on covid regs as were all issues
The price did not reflect these shortcomings, no matter how difficult they were to implement
Breakfast again was comprehensive but inconsistent
The most impressive part of the set up was the staff
All were marvellous. Special shout for Vicky. She was brilliant.
lovely hotel let down by restaurant
The hotel is full of character and history. Our gallery suite was very comfortable with excellent facilities. The bathroom would benefit with updating however everything was spotlessly clean in common with all public rooms. Sadly our whole experience was let down by the restaurant. The menu was extremely limited with a choice of only 3 starters and 3 mains on offer. The dishes were poorly prepared and presented and by any standard potions were very small. The tasting menu was simply a combination of the the main menu and for the price very poor value. All staff encountered were friendly and efficient.

The craggy tors and wide-open spaces of Dartmoor National Park is almost within walking distance. You also have the captivating coastlines of both north and south Devon, and Cornwall can be reached in under an hour too.

For history buffs, Tintagel Castle is close by, here you can explore the romantic ruins as the waves crash around you. The bustling coastal town of Padstow is well worth a visit, especially for its beaches and famous food scene. The pretty harbour of Port Isaac, one of Cornwall's famous fishing villages, is also a wonderful step back in time full of narrow streets with whitewashed cottages.
As for on-site, you can enjoy:

A wonderful event for a stag do, or a family celebration. The local shooting instructor can provide a shoot for groups up to 12 or for individual/couples. The clay shooting takes place on his farm, located approximately 5-10 minutes from the Manor.
Falconry Experience
This session is aimed at people with a natural curiosity for birds of prey. This is a lovely basic introduction to Falconry and birds of prey that is based around the variety of birds that David and his team have. The experience can be quite light-hearted or used to give a more serious insight into the way hunting hawks are trained and exercised. This is very hands-on with guests flying a variety of different birds of prey.
