A very pleasant property!
Excellent property dating back to 17th century ! With a lot of old furniture and artefacts still in excellent condition. Well managed and lovely grounds with an lovely gallery suite that we had. Breakfast was nothing to shout about but evening canap s and dinner was good & excellent petit fours with coffee.
Going through OPLuxury the offer made it good which included a glass of champagne dinner and coffee.
Would recommend it .
A really lovely stay but just a few issues to improve
We had a 3 night package including evening meal on the first night. On the whole we had a very enjoyable stay in this lovely hotel. Our evening meal on the first night was excellent, a fabulous meal, nicely presented and very good service. Our room was spacious, clean, very comfortable bed with quality bedding and large white fluffy towels. The manor and grounds are beautiful and in a lovely part of the country.
There were a few minor things which let down our stay and hence why we wouldn t give 5* throughout and hopefully these issues will improve. First on arrival there is a drop off point but no signs showing to reception. As you come and stop sideways on we walked around a bit to find the entrance. We were not the only guests to say this. On arrival we were greeted appropriately and told our room was upstairs and asked if we wanted assistance with our suitcases. We had only packed for 3 nights but because of the weather forecast including snow and freezing temperatures we had heavier luggage than usual. We thought one flight of stairs would be fine even though we are in our 70s. What we didn t know was it was going to be up 3 flights and through various fire doors and further steps with the last flight going up through a small confined staircase. The hostess was gone in front and I had to say I trailed behind as I found it quite difficult. Had I known in advance we would have asked for assistance. We also had included a welcome drink on arrival which is a nice touch. However when you have to ask when and how you get it then not so welcoming. Maybe a voucher or at least told on arrival would be better.
We had a good nights sleep in our comfy bed but woke up to a very cold bedroom. The heating was on when we returned from breakfast and the following two mornings this issue had been resolved.
There was an excellent choice for breakfast but the service was very slow. One morning we waited nearly 15 minutes before anyone came in to take our order for food and coffee.
The car park has apparently been moved from the front of the house and is about 100 yards away. This was a good decision as it does mean the outlook from the front is very grand. However the lighting to the car park is very low level and not very bright. It s fine for driving with headlights but to walk from the house down the gravel path is quite dangerous as it is so dark and perhaps motion lights might be helpful.
On our departure day it was very frosty and below zero. We left about 10.30am. The steps to the drop off point had not been salted and my husband nearly came a cropper carrying his suitcase up the steps. This should have been attended to first thing in the morning.
These issues are not meant to be critical but opportunities to make improvements and most would probably not be relevant in summer months. Overall we did really enjoy our stay and will definitely return in the future.
2 night stay
We booked the Purple Carrot for our first night. The food, the chefs, the food and the experience were all excellent and the lady on duty that night made our evening complete with her personal touch.
Our standard room in the roof space was a bit pokey with its low ceilings.
Our second night in the restaurant seemed quite ordinary by comparison to the first night.

Falconry Experience
This session is aimed at people with a natural curiosity for birds of prey. This is a lovely basic introduction to Falconry and birds of prey that is based around the variety of birds that David and his team have. The experience can be quite light-hearted or used to give a more serious insight into the way hunting hawks are trained and exercised. This is very hands-on with guests flying a variety of different birds of prey.
