A really enjoyable break, despite the rain
From the welcome by Karen to the farewell by Kirsty, with help from Craig and Laura in the evenings in between, it would be difficult to imagine what else could have been done to make our stay more enjoyable. My apologies to other members of the team who were also very kind to us.
Very enjoyable hotel
My husband and I had a 2 night stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and booked a de-luxe room. After seeing the wonderful reviews for this hotel we couldn t wait.
It s a charming old Victorian Manor House, lovely garden, and our room was spaciously elegant yet comfortable. So was the bathroom complete with claw footed bath and walk in shower.
There are 3 things I always look for in a hotel room- a mirror with a power socket close enough to use a hair drier, a full length mirror, and an overhead light so we can see what we re doing! It s amazing how these are often lacking, but yes! they were all here. Also I thought an excellent bonus, a fridge out on the landing with endless supply of bottled water, and a basket containing top-ups for our tea & coffee tray.
When we went down for dinner there was no awkward wondering where to go a waitress appeared instantly , showed us the lounge and brought us drinks and the menu. The hotel is family run, Craig is the very expert front of house manager in the restaurant , and his father and brother are the chefs.
Overall we found the food in the restaurant superb. I had a fillet steak accompanied by dauphinois potatoes, mushroom with cherry tomatoes and a delicious peppercorn sauce, the whole thing was to die for. The desserts were delicious too. I will say that I was disappointed in two dishes , the mackerel starter had spices which didn t seem to go with it .and the monkfish, which was just not to my taste, I felt it needed more flavour, though the little parmentier potatoes were good.
The lunchtime menu we found particularly good, my husband had a seafood platter, and I had a crayfish & prawn ravioli with a delicious sauce , followed by a cheese plate which we shared. All was very good.
I can t leave out breakfast, this was another happy experience. Unusually they asked us to book a time between 7 and 10am, but when we went down a little notice told us to choose a table and help ourselves to the buffet. No awkward waiting around while someone found us a table or asked us to wait, as so often happens! A waitress always appeared quickly served coffee and took our order for cooked food which was again, overall delicious and well presented. One morning I chose eggs Benedict but with the hollandaise sauce on the side, so I could taste it first. It was really good, someone there knows about sauces! Only 1 disappointment , ( sorry you did ask ) the scrambled egg was very sloppy, Again not to my taste. The sausages were good though.
The service here is really good, and we ll thought out, you are never waiting for anyone or anything. Last but not least Karen on reception is very welcoming and extremely helpful, she even told us the best route home , to Plymouth and she was right!
