good hotel with an excellent restaurant
We received a friendly welcome and shown to a very pleasant room overlooking the sea. The restaurant was closed on our first night but we were given a list of places to eat and had a very nice meal in the local pub. Dinner on our second night in the hotel's restaurant was exceptionally good, as was the service. Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay.
An Excellent Choice
For a relaxed, friendly stay with excellent food, this family-run former manor house is an ideal choice. You are made to feel at home by staff who are both efficient and helpful.
There is a choice of en-suite bedrooms and the one we were allocated was both clean and comfortable, with tea-making and ironing facilities. Thoughtful additions, such as a sewing kit in the bathroom (!) and free water bottles in a fridge outside the rooms added to the family feel about the place. We rarely bother with TV on holiday but it's there for those who like the option.
There is an adequate timetable for both breakfast - buffet or cooked meal of choice - and dinner. It is helpful to kitchen staff when nominating during the day a dinner reservation time.
The hotel is set in pretty gardens for a relaxing stroll. There are fantastic views down to the sea from the lounge and conservatory.
For the more energetic it is a 20-minute stroll down a quiet lane, past a few houses and taverna - closed on our visit due to a kitchen fire, unfortunately. It would have been nice to have been able to sample the atmosphere. The lane leads down through a car park to a small beach, reached by tackling a fair number of steps!
Inevitably the walk back to the hotel is all steeply uphill, so if you are happy to pay the charge then taking the car down is recommended for those not used to walking.
Not a great deal else to do in the area that we noted, except to relax, but Torquay and Teignmouth are only short drives away.
We spent a little time looking for somewhere relaxing to spend a couple of nights in Devon and the Orestone Manor was recommended by a lady at OffPeakLuxury for which we thank her. We would definitely stay there again when in the area.
