Rosslea

MR, Stirlingshire, stayed: January 2025

Last minute booking with no other options available, we booked the Rosslea Hotel in Helensburgh.
On arrival, the receptionist was pleasant but unsure of what I had booked. Check in was quick. We dropped are overnight bags in the room, and ventured to the bar/restaurant for our prebooked meal.
Service was slow, with the food and drink limited. The food we ordered was disappointing, with poor presentation and plain flavours. We attempted 3 courses but unable to finish a course due to taste, leaving the table still hungry.
We returned to our room, which was basic and clean. Bed comfortable for a good nights sleep.
Breakfast the next morning again was of slow service, and when the food did arrive, was really poor. I attempted to cut my haggis but broke in 2 when I put the fork in.
On the surface the hotel is clean but I struggle to believe it merits 4 stars with the poor quality of food and the atmosphere created by the staff.
I will not be returning to this hotel any time soon.

Two night stay at Rosslea Hall Hotel

James R, Lanarkshire, stayed: December 2024

My wife and I recently enjoyed a 2 night break, at the hotel. We were very warmly welcomed by reception. We were asked if we could manage the stairs to our room, I did reply that I had difficulty. Straight away, we were then offered a ground floor disabled room, which was greatly appreciated. The room was large with an enormous very comfortable bed. A wet room was extremely good. Although the room was a bit tired around the edges, it was adequate and clean. One bone of contention however, the key card to enter the room didn't work very well, and we needed assistance from the reception. This was promptly dealt with. Breakfast was exceptionally good with excellent choices, both Continental and anything you wanted from the Menu selection. Dinner, was a bit hit or miss of a sorts! There didn't appear to be anyone having a main meal in the bar area where it was being served.
It felt cold and empty. Menu offered several choices, and although adequate it took longer than anticipated to be served. I had to have my last meal returned as it was cold! Obviously, lack of staff at this time wasn't particularly helpful. That said, the waiter, also the bar tender, was very good at his job.
All in all, it was a pleasant stay for so late in the season.

Location & Local Attractions

Set in landscaped gardens, overlooking the Firth of Clyde in the picturesque village of Rhu – close to Helensburgh – Rosslea Hall is a charming hotel with a stunning seafront setting.

LOCH LOMOND

Located to the east of Helensburgh, the world famous "Bonnie Banks" of Loch Lomond hold the single biggest expanse of inland water in the British Isles, and are renowned for their dramatic scenic contrasts across the area of Argyll and Bute. Helensburgh, located to the west of Loch Lomond, offers elegant promenades along its broad streets and piers. Ben Arthur – known locally as 'The Cobbler' due to its distinctive shape, is one of Scotland's most familiar landmarks and is hugely popular with walkers and climbers alike.

Loch Lomond Island Explorer by Waterbus
Departing from Loch Lomond Shores the Island Experience Waterbus sails to Inchmurrin and Inchcailloch. Hop off to explore these beautifully scenic Islands and enjoy the natural wilderness of the area.

HILLHOUSE

Of the elegant architecture that encapsulates Helensburgh, Hillhouse is certainly one of the most well-known. Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1902, the house offers a timeless elegance. The gardens have been restored to their former glory, and reflect the innovative architectural features common in Mackintosh creations. The exhibition in the upper east wing pays further homage to Mackintosh's avant garde designs and to those of his wife Margaret Macdonald, who contributed numerous fabrics seen in around the house. Entrance is free for National Trust Scotland Visitors.

GLASGOW

Less than an hours drive (or a short train ride via Helensburgh Railway Station) Glasgow is Scotland's largest city. It offers an exciting mix of shopping, arts and leisure options including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene.

LEISURE & SPORTS

Helensburgh offers a wealth of leisure and sport for guests residing in the area, including a local leisure centre complete with large and small pools, sauna, sunbeds, fitness rooms and more. For those keen to make the most of the outdoors, Helenburgh Golf Club is an 18 hole 6104 yards par 69 course. The daredevils among us can combine the stunning terrains with extreme sports at 'Can You Experience? Loch Lomond'. Situated in Balloch within Scotland's first national park, canoeing, biking and power kiting are among some of the sports available, as well as group events and guided walking tours.

HIGHLAND GAMES

For those seeking a truly Scottish experience during their stay; the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games take place in early June. The event, which has run for over 100 years, offers a traditional Highland Games including Scottish 22lb shot putt, highland dancing, heavy events and hill runs. This level of athleticism is hard work, so there are a wide variety of food and drink stalls to refuel. A kid's marquee, coconut shy and haggis throw is more than enough to entertain even the fussiest of children.

SHOPS

Balloch, in the the south west of Loch Lomond and a short distance from Helensburgh, offers a unique scenic shopping experience in the form of Jenners, a department store located by the Loch Lomond shores. Shoppers can browse the finest names in menswear, womenswear, childrenswear, beauty and homeware, before enjoying light refreshments at Café Zest, which boasts spectacular views up Loch Lomond.
