Expected better
Hotel ok grounds nice but a lot of things let it down ran out of both mine and my wife s wine selection halfway through our first night had the fillet steak first night and was not cooked as I asked for and my wife only had one choice on the menu so had to have same meal both nights . Ordered lamb on second night no mint sauce and portion was minute . At breakfast on second morning with my wife being vegan only eats mushrooms tomatoes and beans and no beans available. Very poor . On first night my wife requested a hair dryer for the room it never arrived and mentioned again next day still didn t arrive and finally I left my phone charger in the room when I left so rang the hotel when I got home same day to check for me and asked if they could post it to me which I offered to pay for person I spoke too said they would send someone to check and would ring me back at the latest by the next day still waiting for that call very poor customer service so the much needed weekend away after what has been happening was very disappointing
Has potential but could be a lot better
Maybe we arrived with high expectations and excitement that we were away without our three children but the website and photos certainly supported these expectations.
The setting and the grounds are beautiful and we would certainly recommend walking the grounds. We also walked through the woods to Sandsend and back which was stunning. On arrival we were disappointed to find that we would not be staying in the main accommodation but in the keep which is a new build further away from the hall, dining hall and facilities (spa/gym), with no communal outdoor area. There is a nice touch in a service which drives you to and from the Keep to the main hall and the golf buggy is lots of fun but to us this did not come close to staying in the main place. The rooms in the keep were large and spacious but disappointingly two single beds pushed together to make a king with crack down the middle. The staff member on reception in the Keep was unattentive and straight away you felt you were getting a lesser experience to those staying in the main hall.
The food was lovely but for us the dining hall had no atmosphere, it was full with other diners which was great but there was no ambience (music, lighting) general touches.
We ate breakfast down in the keep which was lovely but took 15 mins for people to notice we were there (again wondered if this would happen in the main hall).
Overall we did enjoy our stay but if we were looking for somewhere with a romantic atmosphere, luxury and first class service this would not be the first place we would come back to.
Disappointed with room facilities
Travelled with partner with the view of having a romantic break. Found room very spacious but was extremely disappointed when discovering bathroom was fully adapted for disability use. This meant, no bath, a large plastic seat in the shower which was also surrounded by large rails. Whilst I appreciate such facilities are essential we were disappointed to be allocated the facilities on our romantic break. When speaking to reception staff regarding booking our dining, we were advised the hall was busy so could only have a 7.15 slot. The whole experience made us feel that despite the price we paid we were ''2nd class customers'' and would have perhaps been allocated better facilities if we booked direct. Restaurant, food and service was excellent. Not value for money but could have been more enjoyable if allocated accommodation in main hall.
