A pleasant stay at Stoke Place
Having just returned from a couple of nights' stay at Stoke Place, the experience was very relaxing with an elegant hotel and beautiful gardens and grounds and conveniently located in Stoke Green. I would recommend this hotel for a short stay.
Elegy Written on a Country Hotel
We've very much enjoyed out stay at Stoke Place, just a short distance from Slough and within easy reach of Stoke Poges with its Thomas Gray associations. Our only criticisms would be of the time it took for our starter to be served at dinner, then having to rush coffee towards the end because the restaurant was closing. No fault of our waiter, who was helpful and courteous throughout, but the overall serving of courses could have been managed slightly better. The bedroom was fine with a lovely view across the lake, but we found it impossible to turn off one of the radiators, making the room warmer then was needed. The woman at reception the next day said that a night porter was available for such issues had we called, but it shouldn't have been a problem simply to turn off the radiator ourselves. Not that these matters detracted from our weekend, and we would certainly stay at Stoke Place on a future occasion. Both the situation and the grounds make it self-recommending.
Worth a visit
My wife and I visited Stoke Place for a romantic break and found the hotel and grounds to be lovely. The hotel staff were also superb and the lunch, dinner and afternoon tea served are absolutely fantastic. In my mind there were only 2 things that let this hotel down (and one of those I can easily forgive) - the room was "ok" it was an executive room but really it was similar to a downsized travel lodge (or similar). The reason I can forgive this though is in an old building they are limited by the room slzes in what was not originally a hotel. The letdown I cannot so easily ignore was breakfast - that was dismal and stole the well deserved excellent rating from the restaurant in my view - let me repeat every other meal here was fantastic - breakfast was not even average. All in all we had a good break that was contributed to by attentive staff, great food and an attractive building but we would not return except to eat.
