Lovely building in good location
The room was a little tired with paint peeling around the coving although the ensuite had been more recently refurbished. The bedroom, despite having 2 radiators, never really warmed up (early March).
The ensuite had no form of heating, not even a heated towel rail.
We both found the mattress to be too soft for our comfort and were surprised to find that there were no USB charging sockets in the room.
The breakfast, buffet style most mornings, was good, serving everything from a full English to cerials and pasteries. The lounge/bar area was well appointed and comfortable.
Not keen with the hotel policy of automatically adding staff tops to every bill; I would rather tip at my own discretion.
4 night town and country package.
The 4 night town and country package short break was good value for money.
We stayed in a standard double room which was large, but only had 3 tiny drawers and a cupboard.
So we lived out of our suitcases for the duration.
The room was also cold. There was a very old radiator that got barely warm.
I guess it is in keeping with the old hotel, but nevertheless it should be efficient.
The cooked breakfast was not up to standard. The black pudding was like rubber and inedible. They had ran out of a lot of things before scheduled finishing time.
The lifts were out of action for the whole our stay, unfortunately we weren t informed of this prior to our stay.Luckily we are both mobile and could use the stairs as only on 1st floor.
We had a beautiful 3 course meal on our first night, a lovely cream tea on our 2nd day, 2 complimentary tickets to James Herriot museum in thirsk which is well worth a visit.
The old swan
I loved the old building and the history of it. Great location too as very quiet. However, the rooms aren't great. Ours was supposed to be an executive room! There was no way I would describe it thus. For one thing there was a patch on the ceiling that looked like it could come down on your head. The room was big but that was the only impressive thing about it.
I do commend the owners for keeping a lovely old building going and the public rooms are lovely. Staff are very friendly but the bedrooms need some attention
