Shame about the food
The "Gourmet Restaurant" really lets down this hotel. The Medium Rare steak I ordered was inedible, fatty, tough and impossible to chew. and its replacement not much better. The burger the second night was served lukewarm and the onion rings were cold. I did not complain again as I was hungry and didn't want to wait for a replacement to arrive. The menu is basically the same every night with perhaps one change to the mains and one to the starters. Choice is therefore limited. On Day 2 there was no black pudding available at breakfast and on Day 3 no toast as the toaster had "caught fire" earlier that morning. It is listed as a 4 star hotel but really is better suited to a lower star rating at present. Improve the food and I will improve my rating. I did point out my concerns at the time and also at checkout and we were not charged for the first night's meal.
Quality of room and restaurant
The room was large and the bed comfortable. The door to the bathroom didnt close properly. The bathroom was out of date and decrepit. The plug to the sink was broken. The shower was broken. The bathroom had wooden panelling which might have been listed but inappropriate nevertheless.
Breakfast wasnt really consistent with the price. Bacon was overcooked and probably pre cooked. Inadequate quantities of toast were brought as well as coffee.
Great looking hotel but tired and in serious need of moderniastion.
Definitely not 4 star
We were in Pear tree annex. Main hotel building attractive. Our room was not even 2 star and the bathroom was dreadful. Towell radiator didn't work, shower temperature control missing and water extremely hot. Overhead shower only and no shower caps. Cold tiled floor with no bathroom heating and missing vanity fittings. Would not recommend at the prices charged. Lamp in bedroom not working and overall ambience poor.
