Nice enough

Anon, stayed: February 2026

Lovely location although road busy this isn t heard from the rooms we just heard it when in the gardens. The rooms facing the front of the main building may hear the road with windows open. Small grounds but lovely to walk around.
Friendly service throughout although slow when ordering in the restaurant for dinner. It wasn t busy so assuming food is cooked to order. One evening it was 30 minutes the second more reasonable at 20 minutes.
Breakfast was delicious and a variety of cold options as well as healthy options, like seeds, nuts and dried fruit although would have liked some fresh fruit to add to my pastries or at the end of breakfast; visited February so maybe this is available in the summer months. Disappointed that there was no hot chocolate available. The machine in the bar was being cleaned but not offered one after and coffee machine sporadically working. Day 2 hot chocolate was delivered but coffee machine still not working properly.
Good choice of hot options to order and very good. From Full English and vege/vegan options to salmon and porridge.
Main building rooms seem to follow the tradition of the historical decor where as standard rooms in Pear Mews have a more modern decor. We had a relatively large room in the Pear Mews and simple decor however didn t quite like the pictures of Mr Meldrew, from One Foot in the Grave looking over me in bed!
Shower over the bath was powerful enough lovely, rapid full for the bath and Molton Brown a nice finish. Towels were soft however the tissue box in the bathroom had only 3 tissues placed decoratively on top an empty box and not replaced when used. Asked for extra hangers, they didn t arrive. Also asked for an ice bucket and glasses but told there would be a charge to the room. Room seemed very clean on surface but windows need bleaching and cobwebs need attention; sorry I m fussy with a dust allergy.
The Pear Mews rooms facing the main building may look over the bins and air con units. The air con units are noisy if you have your window open. We were also near a stairway and despite the door being soft close it still made a slight thud when closing. Kept me awake during the night. A simple foam pad on the door frame could prevent this thud.
Other reviews concerned with decor in the Bar. Although not in keeping with the traditional style of the outside and wood panelling inside, it isn t offensive, just different. Although I agree the lighting could be dimmed somewhat in the evening. However, there are 3 rooms off the bar that have the traditional decor and comfy lounge chairs with lower lighting and windows out to the gardens.

Overrated stay

Robert Johnston, stayed: March 2026

Stayed from 5th to the 8th march it was a 60th birthday for my partner.
I paid over 700 for the 3 nights which seemed very good at the the time.
When i booked i then phoned and askex if there was anything extra could be done for the 60th birthday i was told i would have one of the best rooms with a view i had room 106 overlooking all the staff having there breaks and smoking so couldnt have window open.i was also told that a birthday banner would be in the room no banner was found.
I was told the 2 complimentry glasses of prosecco would be in the room not the case i had to ask for them at the bar on the first evening.
Over staff in the restaurant very good reception staff a liittle different.
