Wedding anniversary disappointment

Jane M, Gloucestershire, stayed: June 2022

Booked this as a luxury break for our first wedding anniversary
Description of the hotel being on the green is very misleading
The hotel fronts the main road and not The Green
Rooms very average
Service very poor, reception didn t answer the phone despite ringing several times, good job I wasn t having a heart attack !! No welcome drink as promised, had to ask, overall feel was off a tired hotel trying to drum up business. Description totally misleading and as the booking was a surprise it didn t help when reception demanded money despite me having already paid and then shouting out the price to my husband !!!!!

The Bear of Rodborough Hotel says...

Thank you for your email regarding your recent visit

Please accept my apologies that you found the hotels location misleading from the description.

The welcome drink we advise guests to take at their leisure at the bar whenever they feel best suits them, I will be making sure that the reception team are clearly communicating this to all guests.

The poor service and the phone not being answered are disappointing to read but myself and the team will continue to improve these areas in order to avoid a repeat.

The hotel has just had an extensive refurb on the outside areas of the hotel with the entire exterior walls being painted and some fantastic new signage, as I am sure you will understand it is on ongoing process to refurb all areas of the hotel and more rooms and areas will be looked at in the coming months.

Kind Regards

Not great value or real luxury

Anon, stayed: November 2022

Booked one of the better rooms at this hotel and pretty disappointed it was tiny, just enough space for the bed and two chairs. Staff were ok but not adept at dealing with pushy customers (of which there were many) who didn't bother to join the queue leaving others like me waiting a long time- this happened several times, at check-in, at the bar, at the restaurant, and its just rude to ignore customers who are waiting, so I wasn't very happy with that.
The place is ok, it just doesn't deliver a luxury experience, its just like a pub with small rooms... Not very impressed for the price, I've stayed in better places for the same money.

Just not quite right

Ian, Berkshire, stayed: April 2023

First of all, let me say that the staff at The Bear are extremely friendly and welcoming and certainly try to be helpful. Unfortunately there are a lot of young and inexperienced staff who seem to lack training, which means that service is a bit haphazard at best.
When we got to our (four poster / premium) room, it was cold and there was no heat from the radiator. After a couple of calls, and suggestions that we turn up the thermostat (which we had done an hour before calling) it was sorted by someone actually turning on the boiler that serves this part of the building. Throughout the stay, the hot water in the bathroom took (literally) 8 minutes to come through - though I was forewarned of this possibility when I asked about the heating.
In the restaurant, I tried to order a glass of Sauvignon Blanc to go with my evening meal, but the young waiter seemed to get a bit flustered, so had to go to the bar about 10 minutes later to chase it up. Someone arrived at the table about 10 minutes later (just as I finished my meal) with a BOTTLE of wine so I had to send it back.
At breakfast, the waiter took my order (Granola bowl with fruit, followed by scrambled eggs on toast) and asked specifically if I would like them served at the same time or separately. I asked that teh granola be brought out ahead of the main dishes, but in fact it just never turned up. For the whole time we were eating breakfast, there were two staff members clearing away about 20 tables and chairs and taking them off to store somewhere - not the relaxing Sunday morning breakfast we'd hoped for!
All in all, The Bear of Rodborough is just about okay for the price paid via Cotswold hotel breaks, but despite the staff being friendly and welcoming, the quality of service lets the place down.
