Stayed for 2 nights in Sept.
Our room in the main building was one of the re-furbished ones and was up a couple of tight staircases which made carrying our luggage a little tricky. The room had a lovely view but as others have pointed out is a little on the dark side. The bed was comfy and the room was well equipped and spotlessly clean, as was the rest of the hotel.
The building is a charming 14th century (I think) combination of nooks and crannies, all beautifully furnished and full of character.
I'm 6ft 5 in tall and so my head was constantly in danger of the low ceilings in our room but I think is an acceptable compromise for the character of the building.
The restaurant was excellent. We don't normally eat in "hotel restaurants" but since it was included in our rate we ate there the 1st evening. It was so good we stayed there for the 2nd night. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. A bug bear of mine is restaurant food that is not quite hot enough - not so here - piping hot and clearly freshly prepared. Jen took great care of us and whilst she worked so hard she was lovely and had time for us at both dinner and breakfast - which was also excellent.
The hotel is located 5/10 mins drive from Chipping Campden set in lovely grounds and whilst we used it as a base to explore the area it could equally be a spot to kick back and enjoy the perfect hospitality.
This is an individual property with tonnes of character that is totally in keeping with the area and of course that comes with the odd compromise. If you're looking for uniformity then stay in a hilton, if you want to feel like you are experiencing something special then I'd highly recommend staying here.
We will be back in the Cotswolds soon and will likely stay here a again.
We stayed on an inclusive deal which included dinner - note that a service charge of 10% is added to the bill for dinner - I feel this is a little misleading as we were led to believe that the price we paid was fully including dinner.
Charingworth Manor/Hyll Hotel
Booked as Charingworth Manor. On arrival, found to be Hyll Hotel - no notice given of this. Very basic reception area and on checking in was informed the room we had booked (CM - Superior Room in Manor House) did not exist now due to internal modifications. Again, no notice given in advance! Manager was called and eventually a Courtyard room was agreed. Next issue was shower flooding bathroom due to blocked drainage - this was resolved quite quickly. It was also apparent that improvements around the building were still work in progress,
Apart from the above, the restaurant and food service were excellent, as was the location. The remainder of our stay was incident free.
A bargain Manoir Quatre Saison
This beautiful stately home, now known as Hyl is clearly aiming to be an affordable alternative to Mr Blancs in Oxfordshire. Having stayed at both, it's highly likely we will be returning to Hyl before we can afford Quatre Saison again.
Recently refurbished, we were given a complimentary upgrade as it was our wedding anniversary to one of the rooms in the roof of the main house.
We were gifted a voucher and as we love the Cotswolds I picked out Cherrington Manor which is close to chipping Camden.
I wasn't expecting much; these voucher hotels can be hit and miss, but Hyl was excellent.
It's superbly quiet being far from the road down a long drive and the bed was huge and extremely comfortable.
The food - again which can vary in these packages- was really well presented and excellent. The wine list could do with another look at, but we found a couple of reds that were palatable if not exceptional.
The breakfast was fab, with a huge choice and local and homemade produce. I recommend the full English.
My wife is a bit of a snob about food, decor and service but even she was impressed.
Definitely going again La Manoir for our Silver wedding, but Hyl for the ones in between.
