Oxford visit.

RD, Suffolk, stayed: May 2024

Booked at the Crown and Thistle as a convenient location for a visit to Oxford which proved a good choice as plenty of buses available. Big bonus for us was the location of the C & T, near to amenities of Abingdon, the river just a short stroll away with some lovely riverside walks.

The Crown and Thistle pleasantly surprised us. The restaurant has a pub vibe and serves good food. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was exquisite.

There goes a regular bus to Oxford. The station is a 5 min walk and the bus takes about 30 minutes.

We took a beautiful evening stroll from the hotel through the Abbey gardens and up the river.

The rooms were clean and decent. They were a bit dated though; they must have been perfect after the major renovations but 12 years later they could use some love.

Short break

Janet, South Yorkshire, stayed: November 2024

The rooms looked lovely online, we had an offer for a 2 night stay including breakfast and dinner on one night, however, our room was fairly small and dark, the lighting was poor and the heating was a unit on the wall above the bed which was fairly noisy, it also hadn't been on when we arrived so it was freezing in the room. There wasn't a mirror on the wall, just one on the unit which plugged in, so it was a struggle to see in it to dry my hair, there was also a small one above the sink. I had to look in a mirror on the corridor to see if I looked ok on the way out. There was a wardrobe which was spacious and a long shelf with half of it taken with the tea tray and then the mirror so I struggled to put my things anywhere as I didn't have a bedside cabinet, there was only one at the other side of the bed. Most of my things were on the floor beside the bed. The bathroom was nice and spacious and it was a freestanding bath with a shower over which was good. We didn't expect luxury given that it is an old hotel but our room in particular needed some tlc and a bit more thought with regard to drawers/shelf and mirror. I m not even sure we were given the right room as we were asked for our name later on and they also had a different room down when we went for breakfast so I did wonder if the other room would have been nicer. We had dinner in the restaurant on the first night which was excellent as was breakfast and I thought all the staff were really friendly, helpful and nice. It was also in a good location to look round the town and parking was at back of the hotel although it was busy on arrival as it was lunchtime so we had to wait a while to get a space. Overall, we had a lovely time.
