Decent but a bit tired
Generally the hotel is OK
The rooms are very tired. The floor of the en-suite was uneven and as it was tiled with hard marble this was unacceptable. I reported this but nothing seemed to happen and I found this disappointing
Restaurant food was good but service was mixed - very good one night but rather confused the next when a completely different team was on duty.
I was left with the impression of the hotel trading on past glories and in need of a dramatic facelift
Restaurant and staff let the hotel down
I booked three rooms for my partners 30th birthday and had breakfast and lunch included in the price.
The barman made it clear to us that he didn't want to be working there and had been stuck in the country due to Covid, it came across uncomfortable and unprofessional. He made the point multiple times.
We all met for breakfast on Saturday morning and it went wrong from start to finish. It took 25 minutes for any drinks to arrive at the table, including water! We asked multiple times. We all ordered breakfast including cooked breakfasts. This took over 45 minutes to arrived and when it arrived it was stone cold. All eggs were hard boiled after being asked if I would like them runny. Mushrooms were cold and bacon was burnt to a crisp. We let the waitress know it was unacceptable food to serve and we were offered some pastries instead (which took another 10 minutes to arrive). What appeared to be the duty manager actively avoided our table and left his inexperienced staff to deal with the issues.
When checking out I mentioned how bad the experience had been and except for listening we were offered no form of apology or recuperation. Everything had been paid for in advance so we had no choice to accept the bad service but I genuinely was surprised how bad it was for an expensive hotel.
Disappointing for what should of been a very memorable weekend.
Danesfield House, February 15th to 17th
Beautiful hotel with very good room. We were told we had received an "upgrade" and certainly the view was wonderful but the shower was awful. We were unable to balance the hot and cold as the hot water was boiling. We ended up showering in the spa! Moreover the shower curtain prevented any pretence of a comfortable experience anyway. The restaurant on our first night was cold warmed only by temporary and noisy fan heaters. Our meals were brought separately because of mix-up between the waiting staff so my wife's meal went cold and had to be reheated while I ate mine as she waited. We were not the only couple to complain. Although offered a free bottle of wine, we would much rather have eaten together in a warmer room. The next evening we took the bar meal option but had to eat in the Great Hall as there were no available tables. Even then our meals arrived without cutlery which took a further 10 minutes to arrive.
Our stay was certainly off-peak but "luxury" it was not. You are definitely not making the best of a magnificent setting.
