Lovely helpful staff and great food but .
Our rooms were disappointing. The rooms were clean and the bedding lovely but the decor was tired and shabby. Our first room in the piggery had a mouldy rotting Roman blind, the double glazing was full of condensation and the bathroom was scruffy. Lucky for us the room (annexe) had no hot water so we were moved to room 11. It was a much better room but again the bathroom was scruffy. The bathroom had painted peeling off the walls, damp stains, toilet roll holder hanging of the wall and mould around the windows. The owners of the hotel should be ashamed of themselves letting out rooms in that condition.
Satisfactory but room for improvement
We booked a 2 night stay which included breakfast and dinner. Drinks are a bit pricey and cocktails were 15 each. I had the pork belly on the first night but I couldn t eat it as it was too tough. When I told the waitress she offered me a steak knife which I declined. So had to leave it. My husband had the lamb which he enjoyed. Breakfast was a good selection and was enjoyable. The second night I had the burger and hubby stuck with the lamb again as the other choices were not to his taste. I couldn t eat the burger as it was disappointingly very dry. We had hoped on the Saturday night it would have been a different menu but sadly not. Our room was comfortable but I can imagine in the hot weather it would be unbearable as it was not in the main house which I would have preferred. Overall satisfactory but not a wow place. Staff polite and friendly.
70th birthday celebration
I booked this hotel as it was close to the Kennet and Avon Canal, where I was hiring a dayboat for my brothers and their wives at a time of celebrating my 70th birthday. The price seemed okay and the accommodation description seemed to fit the bill!
There was a promise of an upgrade if available when we arrived and although it seemed to be the case, no upgrade was offered. The rooms appeared to be luxurious, but some of the decor needed attention. The hotel generally looked like it didn t have a maintenance person. One of the rooms had a toilet that was difficult to flush and despite complaints each day, nothing was done until the final night when it wouldn t flush and the occupants were moved to another room.
The food was excellent, but as the menu only changed every three months, if staying for more than a couple of nights, choices would be limited. There was a 30 per person dinner allowance, but it wasn t possible to have a three course meal for that price, but in reality none of us really needed a three course meal and so we alternated between a starter and the main course or a main course and a sweet. Good wine choice but quite expensive, although I m unsure of the exact prices, as my brothers kindly bought the wine.
Breakfast had an excellent choice of cooked food, but maybe the choice of cold food could ve been better. If some of the standard coffees were required, there was a 2.50 supplement, which I thought was totally unnecessary, consider considering what we had paid..
The furnishing in the rooms was very good and there was a good selection of tea, coffee and hot chocolate, together with biscuits and still and sparkling water. The TV was a struggle to operate and there were no instructions.
