Enjoyable break in the country
Widbrook Grange is not your typical smart country house hotel, but an old farmhouse with gardens, well strimmed but rather past their heyday, and various barns and outhouses, some converted into accommodation and some in disrepair. Dogs are more than welcome.
We booked a two night discounted package in response to an advertisement in our daily newspaper, planning to visit National Trust properties in an unfamiliar area. Our room was one of several in converted outbuildings away from the main house and was large and comfortable with tea/coffee/bottled water/biscuits replenished daily. Unfortunately the dividing walls weren't solid enough to block the sound of our noisy neighbours.
We enjoyed drinks in the bar each evening (huge range of different gins) before adjourning to the dining room (pre-booked table time) for a beautifully presented and delicious dinner. The menu was the same on both nights and, judging from the well-thumbed copy in our room, had been the same for many nights. There was no table d'hote and it would be almost impossible to have two courses within the 30 p.p. allowance; (I would prefer to have pre-paid more so that dinner and breakfast were both included.)
Breakfast, cooked to order, was really excellent.
Overall it was an enjoyable short stay, made the more so by charming and professional staff on reception and in the dining room. A good base for walking and exploring this attractive part of England.
Relaxing quiet hotel with super staff
Nice ambience country setting staff were very good particularly in the restaurant
Evening meal very nicely presented and good flavours although not large portions that suited us but might not suit customers who enjoy large portions . Breakfast unfortunately let the stay down ( tinned fruit ) processed thin ham with eggs Benedict such a shame after the lovely evening meal . Hopefully hotel will change this as we did mention it to them .
They did add a service charge on our meal bill (it did not show separately on our bill. It was just included, we were happy to pay it as service in the restaurant was so good but think it should be made clearer I think it was 12 and a half percent
